“I don’t like this. It feels like something bad is going to happen.”

The feeling became painful, and Helda recognized it. It was the same as what Carab had done to them back in his mansion.

"Yeah." Tayen grabbed the lantern, then spasmed, nearly dropping it.

“Tayen!” She grabbed him, looking at his face, checking his eyes.

"I'm okay... Let's get out of here." The pain in both of them increased steadily.

She stood and helped him up, then left the shack.

Unfortunately, Carab greeted them right there. He appeared well composed despite how their last meeting had ended. He seemed to speak to Helda specifically, eyes flashing with something far removed from his previous twisted interest and excitement. It was rage.

"Hello again. I think it's about time you learn a lesson."

"Last time, he survived. And I let him, because I wanted to do some simple tests and I assumed you'd be cooperative for his sake. I was incorrect."

Tayen collapsed.

Helda screamed. “Stop! Don’t hurt him! I’ll do anything!”

"I could kill him. I've done a bit more... research. Properly applied, this can truly destroy a soul."

“Please, don’t! I swear I’ll do whatever you want, just don’t hurt him!”

"I... should teach you... a lesson." As he spoke, Helda could a tension in the air. Tayen had gone motionless, but the pain was increasing.

“Then teach me! He is innocent!”

"No. The most pain I can inflict on you without destroying your mind comes by killing you. And I'd like you to be lucid for this lesson."

She lunged at him, trying to take his body again.

He stepped back and collapsed her easily. "Let's see. He's already well past the point he reached before. Just a bit further now..."

"And there we go! That was simple enough. His soul should now have lost cohesion and been scattered irreparably across space and time."

Helda wept over it, clutching his body. “No! NO! Please, come back Tayen.”

Helda felt the pain and strange feeling beneath her skin vanish. It left a strange feeling of absence for something that had given no sign of presence.
