She looked into his, her eyes filled with worry.

Several men carrying various weapons stepped into the room.

He cringed at the sight, but couldn't bring himself to care all that much. What, really, could they do to him? Pain was nothing new.

A man tied him down. Directly in front of Tayen was the man whose body Helda had stolen. He smiled as the men began to beat Tayen.

Helda screamed in agony and tried to reach Tayen, but was restrained.

Tayen heard her screams, heard his own, felt himself begin to bleed, but he wasn't present. He was somewhere far away, drifting, body still conscious but empty. He was only tangentially aware as he broke.

Eventually, the beating stopped. It would normally have killed the subject.

Tayen was not dead. He wasn't even unconscious. But his body was quite thoroughly broken. In his disconnected place, he looked through eyes blurry with his own blood, straight at the man who had ordered the beating. The man Tayen had, in some way, saved.

The man raised a hand and the men retreated. He allowed Helda to come to Tayen.

Helda was crying, her tears falling quickly as she ran to him. She gingerly wiped his face, doing her best to clean his many wounds.

He let go again, drifting far away. He wished he could say something to her, but it was too much. Tayen's eyes once again became dreadfully empty. Helda's attempt to clean his wounds only resulted in her hands being slick with his blood.

She hesitated, then her body dropped to the floor as she entered Tayen’s. She followed Tayen through his mind, calling out for him.

Yes

Helda screamed mentally, the pain nearly overwhelming her. But still, she called for Tayen.

Before she could call out, unbelievable pain tore through her. She couldn't see, feel, or think. It seemed to bite at her sanity, at her being.

She screamed again, unable to do more. Tayen would…he would find her right? And protect her?
