Okay. He went back to Helda, eyes a bit teary. I can never fix this.

“You don’t need to. It isn’t your place to fix it.” She pulled him close.

Rex shifted slightly, face wrinkling, eyelashes fluttering. A small guttural moan escaped her lips.

“Rex?” Daniel said.

She moaned again, hand reaching for... something.

Daniel instinctively reached forward, grabbing it. “Rex?” he asked again, worried.

She sighed in relief as she felt his breathing slow.

She opened one eye. "...Daniel? Wh... where...?" She trailed off and coughed, body shaking.

He pulled back for a moment to sign. What do you think I am to you now?

“I… you’re my… boyfriend? Wow, that feels weird to say.”

“I’m here. You’re safe now, that’s what matters.” He looked very worried when she began coughing.

"Water." Rex croaked when her coughing subsided enough for her to speak.

Daniel rushed out of the room, then returned with a pitcher and cup full of water, offering it to her.

Finding his hands occupied in the embrace, Tayen figured he could answer best in another way. He kissed her on the cheek.

She took it, holding it to her mouth hands shaking and water sloping down her chin.

"Thank you." Rex said, voice a bit stronger. She looked at Daniel closely. "You should sit down. You're exhausted!" Rex leaned against the pillow under her head, shutting her eyes for a moment.

“I deserve it,” he said, but reluctantly sat next to her.

He clung to her, and it was like the pain was completely forgotten. It was perfect. More than he knew he could possibly deserve.

It was bliss, what Helda felt. What could possibly be better? No one could possibly be better than him. He deserved more than her. That didn’t stop her though.

"What you deserve is rest. Same as anybody else. same as me. you wouldn't tell me I wasn't worthy of rest, would you?"

Rex rubbed her eyes and at her temples.

More than he deserved...

Just like than, it broke. He felt the pain rush back, fresh as ever, and before he knew it he had slid from Helda's arms and crumpled to the ground. It was so much worse after being rid of it, even for a short time. He wanted to scream, but he couldn't even do that.

"I'm not sure... my head hurts." Rex winced as a bolt of pain shot through her skull.

She gasped, then slid down next to him, cradling his head. “What is it?”

“Stay still, let yourself heal,” Daniel said comfortingly. “Do you want to eat?”

"I don't know if I could keep anything down. I want to sleep, but...." A small tear squeezed from her eye and trickled it's way down her face. she did not move to brush it away.
