I care because you deserve to have someone who cares. And... I just do.

“And yet you can’t understand why I need you.” She laughed softly. “You really are an amazing person, Tayen.”

He didn't respond for a while, averting his eyes. What do you want to do?

Either? Both?

“Honestly, I just want to be in your arms again. But we should probably find some shelter and food.”

He went a bit red. Yes, we should do that.

“Should we…see if there’s an inn?” She was bright red as well.

I know where a few are. Do you think there's enough money left to stay in one?

“For a night at least.”

Okay. Let's do that. Hopefully I can clean up there, too. Can you walk alright yet?

“I should be able to. But…maybe you could give me your arm still?” she blushed once again.

He blushed himself, and smiled. Sure. He held it out.

Later, after Tayen had cleaned up, they sat together in a small diner with some soup. How are you feeling?

I'm still thinking about... It's fine. Not important.

“Yes it is. If it’s bothering you then it’s important.”

If... I could trade places with that girl, I think I would. I can't let go of it. I should have died, and she should have survived. Tears flooded his eyes again. Why do I always live?

“I know that feeling. I have survived so many times when I should have died. Someone else always did instead. But the only thing you can do now is try to make her death meaningful by making your life meaningful.” Helda grabbed his hand. “I don’t think you’ll ever fully move on. But I do hope that you can work past the pain.
