Michael smiled. "Do you want to wait a little bit. Maybe get some energy back?"

...

"What in the Shades..."

He turns back to face his mother, but she isn't there. He blinks and the home disappears, though the screen remains.

"Oh no..." Mike whispers.

"That would be nice..."

"Okay." Michael sits down in the snow. "Get some rest, then we'll get going."

Who knows

Mike closes his eyes, willing himself to wake up. "Come on...Mike, wake up!"

His eyes snap open for a moment, water surrounding him, but he immediately falls unconscious.

Mike opens his eyes and sees the screen of himself. Terror begins to creep into the edges of his mind. He was trapped in his own mind. And that was the scariest place Mike had ever been.

"This is kind of a cold spot, though." Erin shuddered. "Especially after getting soaked in ice-cold water."

Michael blinked, as if only now realizing they were still in snow.

"Oh yeah, maybe we should go a little ways to the canyon where it'll be a bit warmer, then we can rest up a bi-" Michael's eyes turned white for an instant, then returned to normal. He shook his head.

Erin caught it. "...What was that?"

Mike shook his head. "Nothing." He got to his feet and offered Erin a hand. "Shall we?"

...

Mike walks. And walks. And walks. The landscape remains dull and empty, though the screen floats along with him.

They walked without incident, finally reaching the start of the canyon. Michael's eyes flash white once more, though this time Erin doesn't notice.

...

Mike opens his eyes and sees the screen again. "Ughhh."

I must be frozen there. Which means I'm stuck here because.... because I keep healing only to fall unconscious again. Wonderful.

Is Mike actually out of the water?

"Okay. Let's just try to find a spot that's sheltered enough for us to warm up a bit."

Mike is in the water. But Erin doesn't know that.

"Sounds good." Michael nodded to a small grove of trees that hugged the canyon wall. "How about there?"

So this is fake Mike? And would Erin be able to notice that something's off?

"Yeah, that's good." The two sat down, and Erin pulled close to Mike, letting themself relax.

Uhm, kind of. Youll figure it out eventually. And there'll be things that pop up (like the white eyes) that Erin will notice. It'll be hard pressed for them to be like 'oh you're not Mike!' Especially so quickly.

Michael reached an arm around Erin's shoulder, pulling them close. "Ok. You can rest now." He leaned his head back against the tree trunk behind them.

...

Mike stops walking.

He blinks, and when he opens his eyes he is in a white circular room, lined with doors. The screen is still there besides him.

Mike takes a deep breath, then steps up to a blue door. He turns the knob and walks into the light.

Okay, well I don't really know what to do while I wait for that to happen.

They closed their eyes, breathing slow and deep. Something felt like it was nagging at them. The white eyes, maybe. Surely it was fine, though.

Just keep going as if Mike had gotten out of the water and they were just trying to get back to the village.

Michael closed his eyes and fell asleep with a slight smile on his face.

...

Mike watches from above as he tossed a ball to his older brother, Cole. He caught it and tossed it back.

Mike dropped it, and Cole called out "Nice catch Mikey."

Mike stooped down to pick up the ball. "That was a bad throw, Coley."

Cole laughed.

"I'd say that was a pretty good throw." A voice says over Mikes shoulder.

Mike spins around but can't quite see who was speaking as their face was covered in shadow.

"Who are you?"

Okay...

Erin didn't find it quite so easy to sleep, but they nestled into Mike, appreciating the warmth and comfort.

Michael begins to mumble in his sleep, the words incomprehensible.

...

The figure steps into the light, confidently wearing a smirk. He looks much older than the last time Mike had seen him, but Mike knew immediately who it was.

"...Cole?"

Erin listened closely, trying to make it out.

"Of course. Who else would be watching this memory?" He motions to the younger them playing catch.

"I...no. You're not real."

Erin felt a chill. It's probably nothing. But something about it was very off-putting.

Michael woke up with a start.

He glanced down at Erin and saw that they were awake.

"Oh, did I wake you?"

...

"I just thought I should check in, make sure you're doing all right." Cole glances at the screen. "Looks like your body is fine. I'll be back in a little bit when I can sneak in another nap."

"What...?" Mike says, very confused.

Cole disappeared.
