Tayen crumpled. He went completely rigid, and even seemed to stop breathing.

Helda rushed to his side, checking for a pulse. “What did you do to him?!”

He still had a pulse, but was completely dead to the world, face a mask of suffering.

"He's just in... well, a lot of pain. Significantly more than you were in, I'd guess, given how long it took."

“Bring him back! Make it stop!” Tears fell from her face.

"In a moment, but now I'm curious..." She saw a flash of something in his expression, and Tayen went completely limp, pulse gone.

She screamed, then grabbed the man, trying to enter his body.

A wave of pain crumpled her before she could reach him. "Hm. Turns out pain can kill. That kind, anyway."

Against her will, she found her muscles locking and spasming from pain, unable to move her toward him. "I'm sorry. That was only a slight possibility, but I had to try. The cost of science, you see."

She tried to scream, to yell at him, to cry, but couldn’t. She was completely powerless.

Then, Tayen began to breathe again. Carab's eyes widened. "Well, isn't that something..."

Helda sighed in relief (if she can)

Her pain released. Tayen sat up, looking around. When his eyes landed in her, his gaze was chilling. He was expressionless, emotionless. The love and care that had been in his eyes before when he looked at her was nowhere to be found.

She reached out and touched his face gently, lovingly. “What did he do to you?”

He didn't answer, meeting her eyes with emptiness, no hint of familiarity or recognition.

She transferred her soul into his body, trying to see what had happened.

What she found was haunting. His mind seemed evacuated, his own self pulverized. All that was left was a distant memory of pain.

She cried, as only a soul can cry. She tried to see if he would put himself back together.

Nothing seemed to change. Whatever may have been left inside him was very still.

She slowly exited the body, back to her own. She stood, trembling. “Help him. Fix his mind, his soul.”

"Hm. He's not the first person I've broken, but this may be the most extreme and unusual case. I'd quite like to observe him, see what functions he retains and how this could develop." Carab retained his disturbingly gleeful smile.

“I said to help him. You won’t be studying him, you will bring him back and let us go.”

"No... I've never really been able to put people back together. Sometimes they repair themselves somewhat. Otherwise, they make good projects. Good servants, too, in some cases."
