“I know that feeling. I have survived so many times when I should have died. Someone else always did instead. But the only thing you can do now is try to make her death meaningful by making your life meaningful.” Helda grabbed his hand. “I don’t think you’ll ever fully move on. But I do hope that you can work past the pain.

Tayen looked down at the hand, and at his spoon in the other hand, momentarily stuck as to how to respond both mentally and physically. After a moment, he dropped the spoon. Thank you.

“I hope I can help somehow.” She didn’t let go of his hand.

He squeezed hers. You already have, more than you know. For another long moment, he was lost in her eyes. In that moment, he almost believe he could move beyond the pain that plagued him constantly in one form or another, fused to him, made part of him by years of constant familiarity.

She held his gaze. And it was perfect. Everything was right for one.

He glanced away for a moment. You... are very beautiful.

“Thank you. But…isn’t it just an illusion? I shaped this body to be how I wanted it. You on the other hand…you didn’t choose to be that handsome. You just are.”

Ha, ha. But you really are, in more ways than just your appearance. That wouldn't mean much of anything if you weren't also beautiful on the inside.

She blushed deeply. “You think I’m joking, don’t you. I’m not.”

That's very charitable of you. He looked down and began to eat his soup.

Helda did the same. He couldn’t possibly mean what he’d said…could he?

Tayen kept his eyes away from hers, feeling like an idiot. She was being kind, is all. By pursuing this, he would just ruin any chance they had of even being friends.

“Did you get enough?” Helda asked after he finished eating.

Tayen barely hesitated before replying. Okay, you just get a room. I sleep outside all the time.

“No, I’m not allowing that. You take it.”

She looked back, just as determined.

Eventually, he reddened slightly. I'm not going to let you sleep outside if you don't have to, but... we can share it? Only if you're comfortable with that.

She reddened as well. “That’s an option…are you ok with it?”
