dj26792 he/him
So my theory is basically that the Shards were gifts to the Radiants in order to defend the world from the Desolations, and as long as they were used for that, they were cool. I'm proposing that the reason Syl now hates them is that after the Radiants abandoned them they were used to kill people and being used for the exact opposite of their purpose has effected them, their spiritual connection to their bearers has allowed the negative emotions their wielders experienced towards other men to flow into them, and that is the thrill, the built up hatred of 'the enemy' (whoever that may be) from all the people who have used the blades against people flowing back through that connection. The reason the Shardplate hasn't been similarly effected is because they don't know how to set up that spiritual connection with it. This is based on the idea that magic on Roshar has a spiritual focus, and as such the connection between bearer and blade is also spiritual. This is based on the idea that magic on Roshar has a spiritual focus, and as such the connection between bearer and blade is also spiritual. This would also fit well with the fact that it is you actions that control how magic in roshar works. The spiritual connection to Odium forms through the shardblades easily because they are being used to kill or destroy. Shardplate on the other hand forms no such spiritual connection because it is only being used to defend ones self which is not inherently of Odium or of Honor. This would also explain why the Shardplate glows sometimes - when it is being used in an Honorable way the connection to honor would begin to form.
