High prince of geeks he/him Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 We know that if left alone long enough A shard will develop its own personality and a type of intelligence. From the letters in WAK and WOR it seems like the holders of the shards where chosen. Now Rayse may not seem like the best choice from our point of view. He was described as a loathsome and dangerous individual, giving him the power of God's divine hatred doesn't seam intelligent. My idea was at that time they didn't have anyone else, either everyone was already a shard or deemed unfit for extreme power. Leaving the shard to develop it's own intelligence could have lead to a horrible thing that hated everything and everyone, we do not know what Odium's hate is, but maybe it's more directed then we know. Sure he's a danger to the cosmere, but maybe it could have been much worse. Thoughts? 1
Kurkistan he/him Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 (edited) Would you mind citing the WoB on Shards developing into sentience if left alone? This WoB would suggest otherwise. Source: Are Shards able to travel (specifically, planet-to-planet) without a Holder? With the exception of Honor/Devotion/Dominion, are there any Shards currently without a holder? I stole your questions to ask at his Tucson signing. First I have to say thanks, your questions got me two cards. A Szeth card with a code and a RAFO card. First question, his answer was that it is possible for shards to travel between planets without a Holder, but extremely unlikely. Without a holder (he called it an intelligence), the shard would have no impetus to travel between worlds because they're just there. Second question I changed slightly and just asked him "How many shards are there that don't have holders?" That's the one he RAFO'd Edited June 12, 2014 by Kurkistan
Shadowspren he/him Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Since we have begun talking about shards travelling between worlds I have a question... On Scadrial for instance, everyone is born with a bit of innate investiture. If Harmony (specifically Preservation) were to leave Scadrial, would his power invested in humans leave as well, therefore leaving them without sentience? And since preservation's intent is to preserve, could he take back the power he gives to each of the people or would that be contrary to the intent? And other shards wouldn't be able to do it other than to kill all the humans... so it's pretty much permanent
