So a few questions regarding Nightblood. I am inviting more theories, questions, etc...

So first, how the hell did nightblood even get to Roshar?

Does that make Nightblood a Shardblade?

Are Nightblood's usual powers all the same?

How will Sazeth wield a sword that consumes BioChromatic Breath?

Can Nightblood hold up against a Shardblade?

On that note does Nightblood have a soul?

I'm going to take a crack on this, but there are other people that know more about this than I do.

We don't know how Nightblood got to Roshar, but if you look closely, you will see a character that will seem very similar.

We have a WoB that Nightblood would count as a Shardblade.

Nightblood doesn't consume BioChromatic Breath per se, he consumes Investiture, any form of it. Stormlight would be able to fuel him, but we have another WoB that it would be more difficult that just filling him with it.

Since Nightblood is so highly Invested, he would be able to hold up against a Shardblade.

Nightblood is theorized to have been Awakened using a Diving Breath, which would be similar to a spren or a Seon, excepting that Endowment isn't Splintered, like Honor or Devotion. Therefore he would, yes, be Sentient. Not quite sure if that counts as an actual soul though.

Any other questions? Any new ones?

1. Well, Vasher is on Roshar too; it's fairly plausible he made the jump himself. No idea why, though.

2. No, we know how he was made, and it's not the same. He does have similar properties, however.

3. Most probably,

4. Feed it with Stormlight; the Shards all come from the same source originally so it should be possible to fuel any system with the power of any Shard if you do it right.

5. He's much stronger

6. That would be an interesting philosophical question. However, he's got all the magic-related attributes of something with a soul.

Mana. Enchantment. Power, magical energy - on the small scale it powers Allomancy, Surgebinding, etc. On the large scale, it's the tool of pluripotence used by a Shard. Leave a large enough chunk of it alone for long enough, and it turns sentient - Splinters such as spren or seons. Shape it with a magic system and you get an effect. Each Shard seems to have distinctive Investiture, or maybe it's just the way they shape it that's different. Any Shardworld with a magic system is Invested by one or more Shards or significant Splinters. On the scale of a Shard, directed by a mind, it's a massive amount of power, enough to craft planets from the void. Shardic Investiture seems to recycle, getting used and escaping back to the Shard, but there are possible uses that attach restrictions or semipermanent expenditures to a Shard, such as Investing a Shardworld.

Just want to say Swim, that might be the simplest, clearest and most informative description of investiture I've seen on this board.

That makes it all so much clearer. Thank you! So Nightblood just feeds off the investiture of whatever world it's in. I wonder how it could be fed in Elantris or Mistborn.

There's this thing called Jury-Rigging that I know almost nothing about.

Not sure if it was adequately stated above, but anything that is heavily Invested, theoretically could block a Shardblade.

The jury-rigging thing basically amounts to any magic system being able to consume any kind of Investiture, with help. So, theoretically, a Surgebinder Inquisitor could power his Allomantic abilities with Stormlight, if it was properly set up.

In Mistborn, Nightblood could feed off the Mists probably. Or, perhaps, someone who was burning metals, or maybe directly off some metals.

I wonder if Nightblood could be considered some kind of spren. And i want to know how much it exists in the various realms. Cognitave and so forth.

Alas, there is no concrete info on this. There's not even much solid speculation. I think the only way that using allomancy to fuel nightblood is the mists, and maybe, just maybe burning duralium with another metal. You'd probably need to be a saveant for it to work though.

I think he can, but he's a Cognitive entity bound to a Physical form rather than a Cognitive entity with the ability to manifest in the Physical. While Honorspren's identities are based on the concept of honour, Nightblood's "base concept" is Destroy Evil

How will Sazeth wield a sword that consumes BioChromatic Breath?

I hate to correct someone on their own thread, but it's Szeth, not Sazeth.

oh no no no dont worry thanks for the correction

No problem, that's what us 17th Sharders are for.
