Pinpoint
I think that the magic system in the Stormlight Archives might have an interesting parallel to Mistborn. In Mistborn.. Gaining powers via hemalurgy gave Ruin control over the person pierced by the metal Perhaps there is a certain method used to bond with spren that allows Odium to take control of those who used that method. (Words of Radiance spoilers) Maybe the Heralds know this to be the case. However, they don't know the specific method. So, thinking that they are better safe then sorry, they go around killing everyone who had bonded with a spren. Here's another thought. What would happen if a parshendi bonded with one of the strange, red, lightning spren? Would this cause stormform? This might also be what gives Odium control over the Parshendi. Thoughts? Moogle
WoR spoilers: This is quite likely to be how Odium controls the Parshendi.
Swimmingly
Perhaps Odium cannot directly control, but simply augment a person's emotions and rage to the point that their soul cracks open and a Voidspren bond can be wedged in?
