Or are the spirits that Yumi binds becoming nightmares and they take several years to gain enough form to emerge but when they do if they become defeated the binding ends :/

The duality makes me want to look for ways that they are linked

I'm of the opinion that Yumis world some how separated the planets, or at least spirits. Either all the ones who did not wish to become separated themselves were sent to painters world, or all the crazy and dangerous ones were sent away, trapped.

So my (based on little more than intuition) theory is that, just like Yumi separates the definitely not spren into two halves to make lights or pumps or what have you, the world's themselves or at least spirits were separated, and the nightmares have been trapped since that division.

  2. I'm pretty sure we have WoBs saying you do not in fact need to be broken to bond a spren. This is a prevelant theory in cosmere but not actually necessary. I think its more that the spren are impressed by the broken people still trying to move forward toward whatever ideals (small I) attract them in the first place, but perfectly fine healthy non-broken people could attract t spren as well.

I was disappointed as I thought that explained snapping, that they needed to crack the spirit web through extreme circumstances, and perhaps it was a cosmere wide need for investiture. Unfortunately this seems incorrect.

I don't espouse your theory but the rest of it is very well thought out, and you may be on to something.

  3. I'm glad someone brought up the surgebinding perks. I don't think the additional effects are related to the two powers that mix. Just like the one order could tell who was guilty and who innocent. IIRC this has no correlation to their powers. It makes me wonder if the effect gets stronger if one becomes a savant.

  4. On the subject of stormlight burning (bigger) troughs in your spiritweb, I've honestly been thinking about something lately, since you need a gap in your spiritweb from some kind of trauma for the power to flow through in the first place, won't a honorblade just granting surges to its owners necessitate manually blowing a hole in your soul first? Possibly by brute force overflow of investiture? These are splinters we're talking about and all.

The only other known effects of investiture overload come from Vin, so one might actually ascend with enough stormlight . . . unless it is so uncontrollable compared to Mist that it tears your soul apart. Stormlight always gets described like a raging storm in their veins, while Vin mostly reported raw heat without much else, IIRC.

Spook was the savant IIRC, Vin on the otherhand drew in large amounts of the body of a shard. Spook though, used his power so mch for so long that he got super-tin powers. Perhaps a Stormlight savant would have a similar effect and make what you can do much sronger than otherwise possible.

This could in fact be why the heralds are all a bit kooky, for thousands of years they had the honorblades, and when on roshar they likely used their powers non-stop as they had a desolation to fight. then suddenly gave up stormlight altogether.

  5. I've been gone quite a while, but dont we have WoB from a signing that the reason Kal could heal his arm was because he WASNT attacked with a shardblade, but an honorblade. I'm pretty sure i read that somewhere, and here seems likeliest

  6.

If you're going, would you mind asking a couple of questions for me? I'm in Canada and don't have the opportunity to ask for myself...

    1. Is entering a Shardpool of a Splintered Shard different from entering the Shardpool of a non-Splintered Shard?

    2. Can Shardpools function in the same way as an Oathgate, transporting someone where they wish to go?

    3. Are Shardpools a gateway between the Cognitive Realm and the Physical Realm?

Ima go ahead and say thanks on the off chance you might happen to actually ask one of these  :)

I'll do my best. I wonder how often in a Q&A i can ask things without bugging everyone :)

  7. My theory on this is a little out there but here goes:

I think plate is like a second skim that develops at the highest level of the bond.

We see Kaladin getting better at holding stormlight and his healing capacity seems much stronger that Szeths.

In the fight with Gavilar, Szeths face takes a good few minutes to heal (he still can't speak properly when Gavilar is dead).

However, in the arena duel, Kaladin heals two broken legs and two broken feet in a matter of seconds.

My theory is that the strengthening and healing effects of stormilight get stronger and stronger as the bond / oaths progress until eventually a critical mass is reached and the stormlight crystallises into shardplate.

From that moment on, the sharplade appears whenever the Radiant holds any stormlight and glows when they use the surges.

As I said, a bit out there. But it would explain how plate can be a consequence of the bond without involving any spren.

In reference to the "Kalladin healed" bit, I would like to point out that we have WoB (in the WoB thread) that a clue is hidden in the fact that Shardblade wounds cannot be healed, yet Kal did heal from Szeth's attack. Presumabley due to it being an Honorblade and not a true Shardblade.

  8. Admins, thanks for the move.

He has said (as far as I know) that there have not been Listener KR, but that it could be possible.

As to mat's thing, I was referencing the amazing luck (for random things). He was always able to win more than he lost, but it became something more than that. It is vaguely mentioned that he won while he had the dagger but pre-healing, but nothing like what happens once he tries to escape Tar Valon onward. Mat has many of the same manifestations of his ta'veren-ness as the other two, but his luck always seemed something above and beyond just mere ta'veren.

This extra luck (that does not have balance, it is always in his favor as long as it is random, and still in his favor but less often when less random) seems to occur after his healing, but definitely after his possesion of the dagger

  9. The first book is incredibly slow, I admit, but after that, they pick up quickly and are much better. If it weren't for the necessary info the first book gave you, I'd recommend skipping it.

I almost put down The Eye of the World due to the incomprehensible prologue. I cannot say how glad I am I kept at it. For those who coudn't keep going, the books keep getting better 1-6 and at 11-14 get better than the one before again!

  10. Hey guys! I'm at Jordancon this weekend. I will have the opportunity to ask Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss some questions. I have so far:

Odium shattered Devotion and Dominion because they could oppose him. Did they have some special ability to do so or are any 2 shard on the same planet a danger to him?

If a Listener bonded an Honorspren would they get the same powers as a human? And if a Human bonded a stormspren would they have the same powers/consequences that the Listeners do? (Shamlessly stolen from a thread in the WoR discussion board)

What would be the real world carat value of a chip and a broam?

    WoT spoiler

Was the Healing of Mat what caused his luck, or did it start with his connection to the dagger? (I've always thought it was the healing, but some disagree)

Lightsong notices that there is always enough room in the Palace for the Returned. Is there a cap on how many Returned may be alive at once or would they just build the Palace larger?

That's all i have any suggestions please post them for me

PS if this is in the rong area please relocate it for me

    Thanks Admins!!

  11. I'm pretty sure that the ability your closeness to Preservation gives you is the ability to burn a metal. Not to access a power, not to use investiture, but to burn. What metal you can burn determines the effect you can get.

Brandon has said that much like the way Aons' shape determine the outcome, Allomancy works in much the same way. The shape of the molecules  determines the power that comes out. The ability to 'burn' is the magic power. The metal just filters the power of creation into whatever it's shape determines. It would not matter, therefore, which planet the metals come from. The metals do not give the power, their shape determines which power is released, and assuming that all the plaents in the galaxy have the same periodic table, any metal will work from anyworld.

However if you know how, or did the juryrigging mentioned I'm sure you could burn the stormlight in the same way vin could burn the mists.

  12. I slightly disagree here. Preservation's intent is to preserve. Just that, preserve. Not only life but everything, it could not make people alone as that would not preserve the planet, or the ecosystem, it would change it. In any change, in any creation something is destroyed and something is created. This is why the Empire stayed so stagnant, the LR influenced by preservation wanted to preserve everything (as well as keep his rule intact so he could continue to release the power in the Well). Thus no change. If he allowed technological advancement, it would ruin (or destroy) the current status quo, even if it was a change for the better it is still a change. Ruin on the other hand couldn't create anything alone, because creating is diametrically opposes to ruining. However with help he could, as creation gives him something to destroy.

It was actually the breaking of the pact made with Ruin that gave mankind sentience. With equal bits of Preservation and Ruin they were not sentient, but with Preservation giving them a bit more of herself than they had of Ruin caused sentience. Unfortunately this made ruin stronger, and would have allowed Ruin to win and destroy everything. This is why preservation attacked Ruin and trapped a portion of him in the Well, this equalized their available power again, allowing the world to go on.

  13. The way the Preservation system worked was that the Lerasium made you closer to Preservation, the by-product of that is to become and allomancer by default. Not positive about the feruchemy, but I do not think Hoid needs to change his sDNA exactly. I think that he knows the ways to get around some of the normal restrictions in many magic systems. Perhaps his Yolen pre-shattering sDNA makes this easier but I think with the right knowledge and work, anyone could do the same.

I am not certain if the other worldhoppers are doing the saem (collecting investiture from the worlds they visit) but I'd bet Mraise is based on his collection :)

  14. I disagree. I think Dalinar believes he knows what his curse and boon are, but he has it backwards. I think HE believes that losing the memory of his wife was his boon and his curse is Renarin's illness. I however think he is wrong.

I think he went to the nightwatcher and asked for his son to live. It was granted though not a perfect healing. His curse was to lose the memory of his wife and perhaps the memory of exactly what he asked as well. Now he remembers nothing about his wife and cannot even hear her name. Due to the way he still feel about Navani, I think he now thinks that he felt the same way or stronger about his wife (because his love for Navani is all he has to base his feelings on) and had her memory taken so he could deal with her death.

I'm of the opinion that Dalinar didn't love his wife (at least not as much as he did Navani) but he no longer remembers his feelings toward her, and takes Renarin's illness as punishment for using the Old Magic.

I think it has a nice symmetry  to it, (and we know how important THAT is on Roshar)  Nightwatcher granted him the life of a member of his family, at the price of losing the memory (or life in a way) of another member of his family. As the boon could be construed as a non-selfish boon, the curse, while fitting may not have been as bad if he did not have strong feelings for his wife to begin with.

    That's my theory anyway

  15. Guys I will add the series Codex Alera, Night Angel trilogy and some YA goodies such as Bartimaeus and Monster Hunter International.

I dunno what about you but I find Abercrombie characters and fighting scenes on per with Stormlight Archieve books, just his story and scope (and endings) give much to desire.

BS knows how to combine well crafted story, grand scope and fine characters wich develops over time and Isn't scared to kill them off if the story demends it.

The little tidbits about the cosmere and foreshadowing he throws in after the xxx number of drafts shows he really cares.

Hey guys! I personally liked the Dresden files WAY more than Codex Alera. Interesting fact, he wrote the first Dresden book in school as a white mutiny against his writing teacher. He tried to do everything she told him exactly to the point of being terrible, but somehow it worked. As for Codex Alera, he took a bet he could make a good story out of any 2 terrible ideas. The ideas chosen were the 'lost roman legion' and pokemon. :)

  16. I think it's just a sympathy thing. People we know only by their last names are not as sympathetic to us as people with whom we are familiar. You'll notice it's the distasteful 'bad guys' that are primarily refered to as only a last name.

  17. As for the 3 of 16 quote. I have an Idea I believe to be pretty solid.

There were 3 of 16 here. Honor, Cultivation, Odium. Then some stuff went down. Honor got shattered, Odium ran off to Braize and Cultivation withdrew from the planet and mankind, with the exception of her Nightwatcher spren doing some stuff, but only if people seek it out, and even then it seems to be theoretically end-neutral investment. One boon, one curse. Probably how much the Nightwatcher likes you determines the severity of both.

Therefore with Cultivation and Odium (for all intents and purposes) no longer working on the planet, it is left to the broken one Honor (or his collection of splinters, plus the big one, stormfather) to reign over the entirety of the planet.

The stormfather even seems bound to start/release the  Odious Everstorm if the Parshendi ask.
