  1. "I guess that might be best."
  2. "Mostly. Just still a bit shaken, I guess."
  3. "Well, it is. I chose to say it." They shrugged, and stumbled again.
  4. "I'm sorry. I guess I shouldn't have brought it up."
  5. "Okay. I just need enough time to prove to you that you shouldn't."
  6. Erin looked him in the eyes, now dead serious. "Mike, promise me that you won't try to hurt yourself again. Please."
  7. Erin frowned at him. "You really aren't. I promise."
  8. "Not because of you. Despite your efforts, maybe. You aren't hurting people."
  9. Erin stumbled for a moment, but didn't quite fall. "So, we'll be rejoining your group?"
  10. They took it gratefully. "You'll be fine?"
  11. They shivered. "It's... cold. That's new."
  12. "I should be fine." Erin stood up, somewhat shakily. Their robe fluttered in a gust of cold wind.
  13. Erin grimaced. "I guess that's probably the best option."
  14. Erin grew somber. "Technically, yes. But I don't think they'd want to see me."
  15. "That's what I was asking."
  16. "It is quite comfortable."
  17. They didn't seem to quite catch the implication of his words. "So, what now?"
  18. "I'm really glad I stopped you from jumping." They laughed too. "I saved you, you saved me. It's like we were meant to find each other."
  19. Their eyes swam with tears. "This has been quite an eventful fifteen minutes, huh?"
  20. "No. No, I'm okay now." They began to pull away, then collapsed back into Mike's arms. "How about you? Did you get hurt?"
  21. "It hurt so, so badly."
  22. After a moment that seemed to last far too long, Erin drew in a deep breath, and began to sob into Mike's shoulder.
  23. Suddenly, the light faded, as though expelled from them through the smoke. Erin went still, unbreathing.
  24. They began to convulse violently, screams continuing with a raw voice. Then they stopped, and Erin stilled to a light twitching. Mike heard a hoarse whisper. "Kill me. Please."
  25. They embraced him back. "It's okay. It's not your fault." The glow continued to increase, well past its former strength. Erin's body grew extremely hot to the touch, and they stumbled back. Then, they doubled over and began to scream in agony.
