  1. I was reading through Elantris' Ars Arcanum and reading through the list of Aons and noticed some of their meanings that had very direct correlations with specific shards. So, I decided to see if I could find corresponding aons with each shard. I failed. But, I did find some interesting connections that I figured I'd share so I don't feel I wasted half an hour. To be clear, I don't think this actually means anything, it's just something I found interesting.

Devotion: There aren't any Aons that specifically mean "devotion", but there is Aon Seo which means Loyalty / Service, which is close.

Dominion: There aren't any Aons that mean "dominion" or any synonyms. But, some Aons that are correlated with dominion are: Dao (stability, security), Eda (superior, lofty), and Ope (nation).

Preservation: The closest Aon to preservation would probably be Aon Edo, which means Protection / Safety.

Ruin: The closest Aon to ruin that I could find is Aon Sheo, which means Death and is a rather tentative connection. I also want to mention the obligatory Aon Ati namesake connection.

Odium: There aren't any Aons along the lines of Odium / Hatred. There are Aons such as Teo (royal, majestic), Rii (wealth, affluence), and Eda (superior, lofty), that sort of correlate to personality traits of Odium, but they more represent aspects of Rayse's personality than the shard Odium.

Cultivation: Much like Odium, there aren't any Aons meaning cultivation. But, there are many Aons representing something to do with life, such as: Dii (wood), Eto (body, flesh, muscle), Kaa (plants), Opa (flower), and Tii (green). Also, yes, I am aware that Cultivation doesn't equal life, but these were the closest connections I could find.

Honour: This was actually the one that inspired this whole post as there is a perfect correlation with Aon Mai, which means Honour.

Endowment: Just like Honour, Endowment has a perfect correlation. This time with Aon Eshe, which means Gift / Endowment.

Autonomy: There aren't any Aons along the lines of autonomy / independence / mastery. But there are the Aons: Soi (order, organised) and Are (unity, cohesion), that are similar to traits we see Autonomy resemble.

Ambition: Ambition was very difficult to find any connection for. The closest was Aon Ati (hope), but that is tentative at best.

Invention: Invention was difficult because we don't really know what its Intent is, and there aren't any Aons meaning invention. The closest ones were: Sao (intelligence, learning), Shao (transform, change), and Ene (wit, cleverness) (in modern usage, Ene is used much the same as Sao).

Mercy: Mercy is another one with a perfect correlation. That being Aon Ido (mercy, forgiveness).

Valour: Aon Aeo means Bravery, which is close enough to valour.

Whimsy: I couldn't find anything for whimsy, feel free to leave anything you find in the replies.

The Survival / Wisdom / Prudence, etc... Shard: We know virtually nothing of this shard but Aon Ien (wisdom) could be a good fit.

    Secret Project 3 spoiler below:

    Spoiler

Virtuosity: I couldn't find anything for virtuosity. Just like whimsy, feel free to leave your ideas below, but please give a spoiler warning for those trying to avoid all knowledge of future secret projects.

What would happen if a Mistborn ingested the metal of a Shardblade/Plate?

    Brandon Sanderson

A Shardblade is Invested. A Mistborn isn't likely to have a tie to that type of Investiture. So probably nothing would happen…

    General Twitter 2013 (Oct. 24, 2013)

This WoB implies that in order to burn some God Metals you already need a Connection to that Shard, so it doesn't make a lot of sense (or at least it wouldn't be noticeable) that burning those metals established a Connection. Tbf though, this is an old WoB so things may have changed.

  3. Brandon has stated in the past that a Shard's intent is filtered through the vessel, and the vessel can have an effect on how the Shard's intent is portrayed.

    Spoiler

    Questioner

I was just wondering if a Shard's intent can change over time without changing holders?

    Brandon Sanderson

Without changing holders? The holder can have a slight effect on how the-- a big effect on how the intent is interpreted, but what the intent is stays the same. So it's gonna be filtered. The way it manifests can change, and you'll see that happening, but it is the same intent. When it was broken off, it took a certain thing with it.

Salt Lake City ComicCon 2017 (Sept. 21, 2017)

My idea is that Honor's broad intent, without the filtering by Tanavast is that it wants to form Connections. We can see this in Surgebinding (an art which, while being of both Honor and Cultivation, seems to be mostly Honor) is initiated by forming a Nahel bond. I also remember hearing somewhere (although I don't remember where) that because Honor violated the pact the Shards made not to settle on the same world, that they mustn't have been clearly defined well enough. This seems to imply that Honor at least follows oaths and Connections by nature of its intent.

If this is true, then I think it is a reasonable assumption that Odium, without the filtering by Rayse, is about severing Connections.

If these both apply then I think that the method of initiation to becoming a Voidbinder requires you to severe a Connection of somekind. We also know that Voidbinding is usually related to the Unmade, so you might be able to come up with a more detailed theory including that.

Note, I do not think that you necessarily have to break Radiant Ideals or severe a Nahel bond to become a Voidbinder, just that it requires some Connection to be broken.

  4. It is well established in Mistborn that Allomancy is Preservation's magic system, Hemalurgy is Ruin's magic system, and Feruchemy is a combination of both shards. But wouldn't it make sense if Feruchemy was Preservation's magic system as the whole concept of Feruchemy is preserving your attributes for later use. And also, Allomancy would make more sense being a combination of the shards as it is a NetPositive magic system and it is established that combining Preservation and Ruin creates something. Hemalurgy makes sense as Ruin, though.

  5. It has been stated with enough training, determination and strength a seeker could "hear" the storing and tapping of a metalmind. So, I believe, this to be entirely possible. Of course, as you can tell by the other comments, this has neither been confirmed nor denied. And, if it were to be possible, I believe the same thing would apply for Nicrobursts, forcing a Feruchemist to tap their metalminds.

Saze specifically teases that there are two more  to be discovered. So I suspect it was Kell who told him which ones they were.

Spook likely would've assumed he was talking about the external enhancement metals (Chromium and Nicrosil), so those would be what they were looking for, because, unless Sazed stated otherwise, they still believed Atium and Malatium to be the external temporal metals. It is possible that in the search for chromium and nicrosil they discovered cadmium and bendalloy, but it would not have been what they were looking for.

I would like to point out that if they found out about bendalloy's use before cadmium and found that was allomantically viable, they would then know that one of Bendalloy's alloys would be allomantically viable and then find out it was cadmium.

Bendalloy is the alloy of cadmium, not the other way around. If they did discover bendalloy first, then they would have to find which of the base metals were also allomantically viable, cadmium or bismuth.

I don't know how many of these are actually conformed, and I searched Arcanum for Constant and found nothing for Twinborn. This seems to be Weiry's speculations, with the green being confirmed

Brandon has said that the Mistborn: Adventure Game is canon until he makes it otherwise.

  9. In the section of Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning's Ars Arcanum talking about the three Metallic Arts it says:

    Spoiler

On Scadrial, there are three prime manifestations of Investiture. Locally, these are spoken of as the "Metallic Arts," though there are other names for them.

Does anyone know what the other names for the Metallic Arts are?

  10. Do we have any idea of what the spiritual realm looks like beyond "spiritwebs"?

Because (I don't know why) but I always imagined the spiritual realm as having little gems or orbs for every thing in the cosmere, these little gems or orbs would contain the identity, fortune and intent of everything. The orbs would be surrounded by little threads wrapping around it (investiture) and then some going to wrap around other orbs (connection). I also believed that events that took place in the spiritual realm wrote the destiny of each orb. Obviously, much of this is completely false, I was simply sharing what I imagined the spiritual realm like and asking other people to share what they think it's like.

  11. I wasn't sure whether I should post this on the warbreaker or mistborn forum, so here it is:

If you gave a mistwraith enough breath for it to become sapient, would the result effectively be a kandra made without hemalurgy? If so, then Harmony would have no influence over it, but would Endowment?

Honestly I came into the shard creating thread after thread of questions on what F-nicrosil does. I concluded that it probably stores the ability to use your powers. Kinda your spiritual investiture. That’s probably how unsealed metalminds work. You have a feruchemist be identityless with F-aluminum, then fill any metalmind along with a nicrosilmind. That way, anyone gains the ability if they use it, and can access the metalmind. This would mean that the feruchemist would lose that ability, which is where exicors come in. The probably somehow have the ability to fill a nicrosilmind without making you lose your ability to use that metal, kind of cheating Feruchemy.

I hope this helps, but I think my wording’s a bit funky, so my bad.

I was under the impression you only would'nt be able to use allomancy/feruchemy while actively storing nicrosil and after releasing it the ability comes back. As in, it isn't a permanent thing because no other feruchemical attribute is permanent after storage

From everything that we know you can't force someone to tap a metalmind. Someone has to Intend to tap for the investiture to flow through them. However if someone was already tapping their metalminds it is perfectly reasonable to assume that you could then Nicoburst them. This would result in them using up all their stored Investiture in whatever metal they were tapping at the time. If they were tapping health then they would now be extremely vulnerable.

Or leech it with chromium, because if they (somehow) were to be struck with a lethal blow when their investiture was boosted, they would survive.

Not an Ettmetal weapon, but an alloy of Lerasium and Atium? (Leratium?)

I think Ettmetal explodes because each particle has the Intent of both Ruin and Preservation. Leratium would be a mix of particles with Ruin's intent and particles with preservation's intent, not both. Hence, no exploding.

And I mean, Spren Shardblades are alloys of Honor and Cultivation's Godmetals, if I'm not mistaken.

This reminds of a theory I think I saw somewhere that I like. The theory goes that there are 3 allomantic alloys of atium+lerasium. If Lerasium > Atium then it would result in the burner becoming an atium misting. If Lerasium < Atium it would have some OP temporal/mental power. If Lerasium = Atium then it might have the effects of ettmetal (perhaps with some differences, perhaps completely different) without the explosiveness. All that being said, there is no evidence to back this up and is just a fun thought experiment, because a lerasium + atium alloy (talking if there was only 1 alloy) which makes atium mistings is kind of boring.

  15. There was a creative challenge that my friend told me and I wanted to share here (feel free to do it if you want to):

Basically you are coming up with 2 (you can do more but best to go with an even number 2,4,6,8 etc...) new metals which are fully functioning for the metallic arts. Criteria is bullet pointed below:

    • The metals and their alloys must exist in real life (no god metals)
    • Metals can belong to any of the four quadrants (physical, mental/cognitive, temporal/hybrid or enhancement/spiritual) but both the pure metal and its alloy must belong to the same one. Same goes for external/internal.
    • You cannot make up your own quadrants to categorize them in.
    • The pure metal must be a "pull" metal and its alloy must be a "push" metal.
    • The metals must have an allomantic, feruchemical and hemalurgic power which fit with their quadrants
    • Their hemalurgic power cannot grant allomantic or feruchemical powers. i.e. must be a human attribute
    • <optional> The metal has a kandra blessing with a name. i.e. Blessing of <insert name of blessing here>
    • Come up with a misting and ferring name for each metal.

For example, here is my own creation (hidden for those that don't really care and for length):

    Spoiler

Lead (pure metal) (mental, external, pull)

Allomancy: Creates a bubble around the user which causes all people inside the bubble to have slowed down cognitive functions (like a sparker filling a zincmind). These effects do not effect the allomancer.

Feruchemy: Stores emotional influence. Filling a leadmind will cause the Feruchemist to have an emotional soothing effect, feeling dampened emotions. Tapping a leadmind will cause an emotional rioting effect on all emotions of the user.

Hemalurgy: Steals reflexes/ steals reflex speed.

    Kandra blessings: Blessing of Reflexes

    Misting: Pacifier

    Ferring: Swinger

Terne (lead and tin) (mental, external, push)

Allomancy: Creates a bubble around the user which causes all people inside the bubble to have sped up cognitive functions (like a sparker tapping a zincmind). These effects do not effect the allomancer.

Feruchemy: Stores talent/skill. Filling a ternemind will cause the Feruchemist to have a significant drop in talent in all skills, bad at it and struggles. Tapping a ternemind will cause the Feruchemist to have a significant surge in talent in all skills, good at it and easy.

    Hemalurgy: Steals talent/skill

    Kandra blessings: Blessing of Simplicity

    Misting: Igniter

    Ferring: Keenskill

Personally, my theory is that Kell is trying to steal Autonomy for Sazed. Because Saze lacks Autonomy and Kelsier WOULD steal a Shard. Or try to, anyway.

I wonder if that would have anything to do with Trell, like is Kelsier the reason for Trell's existence? I mean Autonomy seems the most likely shard for Kelsier to be attempting to get, but why? Why steal a shard with a vessel, when there is already shards without them? Is it harder to call vesselless shards than ones with a vessel (because for a vesselless shard it would really have to fit the intent in order to call it, but for a vessel shard you could just call the vessel, trick them maybe)?

Possibly(?) According to the coppermind, we don't know what happens when you compound a coppermind.

One possibility is that it improves memory, but that is debatable.

Or increases recollection of the event, greater than when filling the coppermind? Maybe you could then store the compounded memory in another coppermind, and still remember it hazely in your head?

    Just my own speculation

Scadrial is very easy to visit post-Catascande per a WoB. Sazed has a perpendicularity, as do other Shards (there’s a mention in a broadsheet). However, what I said was a general rule.

If it was suicide to go to Sel’s Cognitive we wouldn’t have Elantrians on Roshar or the Ire wandering the Cosmere. Have you read RoW and BoM? If you have, I’ll PM my opinion on Scadrial.

How Sazed views Harmony has little to do with the fact that it is still composed of two opposing forces. He does view it as Harmony; that is why it is Harmony, not Discord. Either way, the longer he holds the Shard the harder it will be for him to change. And unless something changes, Ettmetal will continue to be unstable.

If your hypothetical requires the very nature of a Shard to change in order to work, then it is a very unlikely situation. If Harmony becomes a triple Shard, well, that’s another story.

But I think Scadrial is more likely to try and develop ‘robot Spren’, like Nightblood.

I'm going to back out of this conversation because it seems you know more than I do; however, I will say that there are plenty of splintered shards without vessels for Harmony to absorb (Devotion, Dominion, Ambition and Honor (I know the lore leading up to Stormlight Archive but I only started reading the books at Christmas, so I don't know if someone takes up Honor, but my point still stands)).

  19. I would like to think that Harmony would make a stable perpendicularity where lerasium grows (like the lerasium version of Pits of Hathsin). In order to balance out Preservation and Ruins power, once the Pits of Hathsin produce atium again (it was mentioned somewhere in era 1 that the Pits would regrow all atium in ~300 years (the length of time between era 1 and 2).

He would also likely destroy the Well of Ascension (or atleast the perpendicularity part) because it know serves no purpose.

Obviously this is pure wishful thinking, nothing else (felt the need to clarify)

  20. 1 minute ago, Kingsdaughter613 said:

Ettmetal explodes due the opposing nature of Ruin and Preservation. It is the physical manifestation of that Investiture, just as the mists are the gaseous form and the perpendicularity is the liquid form. For Ettmetal not to explode would require the fundamental nature of Harmony to change.

I believe that if Sazed began to view Harmony as a shard completely distinct from Ruin and Preservation, then the opposing nature of the shard wouldn't make sense anymore, and he would be free to edit the nature of ettmetal.

Also, perpendicularity? Scadrial era 2 has no stable perpendicularities. I assume you mean the Well of Ascension, but that is very unstable (I mean it has a non-splintered shard trapped in it) it would be suicide to use it to worldhop to Scadrial, as it would be suicide to go to Sel's cognitive realm. The Pits of Hathsin were stable, but Kelsier destroyed those (to the dismay of Hoid), the Pits are about due to regrow in era 2, but (as far as I know) they haven't yet.

Someone takes a harmony spear and stabs someone and we will have a non-hypothetical explosion. Ka-BOOM! Ett Metal explodes on contact with water, after all.

Except if Harmony were to make these spears, and make them functional, he would likely edit the ettmetal the spear is made out of, so that it doesn't explode.
