    Resonance

can somebody explain resonance on a bit of a deeper level? it makes sense that mixing magic systems might create an effect that neither magic system would have had before. a great example of this are the knights radiant and how incredibly different each order is. what i don’t understand is resonance on scadrial, specifically between feurochemy and allomancy. so twinborn can use their feruchemy to give them certain perks when using their allomancy and vice versa. but asides from compounding, i cant think of any crazy effects that twin born have. according to khriss, mixing magic systems spawns a type of effect or “reaction” that is unusual. wax can use his mass to affect his speed using the properties of conservation of momentum, but anyone who has a basic understanding of physics know that any iron ferring can do the same thing (minus the steel pushing part). ex: you tie up an iron ferring and decide to catapult him at a pile of mistwraiths, if he decreases his mass he will get a little spurt of speed because he is still conserving his momentum. no steel pushing required what can wayne do because of his powers’ resonance? he can put up a time bubble and use that extra time to heal himself, but anybody that has been out in a time bubble can do that regardless of whether they are the ones doing it or not. brandon mentioned in a WoB that TLR didn’t have the same resonance as a twin born did, since he had all of those powers and didn’t use any two of them enough for them to resonate. the just confuses me since i don’t know what TLR couldn’t do with with his powers that Wax can. would TLR not be able to play with soeeed and momentum by messing with his ironmind and allomantic steel? any thoughts or answers or wild guesses on the subject would be much appreciated!
  2. i don’t remember that... do you know the chapter or have a quote? i just want to find where i missed it(:
  3. right, we know that this is a literal change in mass (or at least something that mimics it closely since Wax’s density doesn’t change). I feel like at the very least, if not giving him more strength than what the books show him capable of doing, Wax could squeeze more out of mass manipulation. Due to the conservation of momentum, Wax could achieve pretty much super speed while running as well as Pushing! If Wax was at 10x normal weight and was sprinting at 10 mph (for the sake of easy numbers) and then suddenly decreased his weight back to normal, the result should be a 10x increase in speed— if i’m doing my physics right. We see him manipulate his speed by changing his mass while he is pushing on metal, but he could do this much more drastically if he wanted to. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that suddenly changing his speed that much would be dangerous, and at some point air resistance would come into play, but i think this is the kind of thing we should seeabit more of in the future. I think Wax might not need to be so reliant on his allomantic steel.
  4. so then it seems pretty clear that pushes are not exclusively based on the anatomical center of mass... could it be that it originates from the coinshot’s self perceived center of mass? my guess is that it is more likely that while it is much easier to push from your center of mass (or close to it) and it is more instinctual, but over time and after lots of practice (probably being savant level) you could manipulate this like Zane and Kelsier does.
  5. okay so i think we have cleared that donating yourself to hemalurgy might have some poor consequences for you in death. Couldn’t we override this though? If we gave subject A (the person donating their allomantic abilities to their buddy) an unkeyed/unsealed goldmind with enough health stored to keep subject A alive while we spiked out there allomancy (we know F-Gold heals the soul) then their spirit would be restored and boom. They are fine, no side effects, and subject B (their buddy) has allomancy. WIN WIN!
  6. ooo yikes @Yata good point, I hadn’t even thought of that. I have a feeling that once whoever was spiked dies, the fragments that were spiked out of a person would return to the original owner. I don’t have anything to back this theory up except that when a kolos dies, several seperate souls appear in the cognitive realm. Not one jumbled mess of sDNA.
  7. Alright so I was thinking. Spooks book about hemalurgy is a little disturbing (hemalurgy itself is pretty much disturbing) but it has some really great points. Today people donate their organs, their bodies to science, and they leave behind their money to their kids. Would it be SO crazy to want to give my kid or friend my metallic abilities? And we know that hemalurgy doesn’t even need to steal magical properties. Would it be possible to give my grandkid my mental capacity to add to their own if i didn’t have an allomantic/hemalurgic ability to give to them...? Or what if somebody you knew was injured and you wanted to give them your ability to burn pewter. OR WHAT IF Your friend doesn’t have a body but needs one that is mistborn and you happen to be the last mistborn (presumably an incredibly powerful one since harmony himself gave you those abilities). Maybe that is where the sovereign got this nice new body?
  8. woah! thanks for commenting on my little thread!

also my birthday is also october 30. butni was born in 1999.

anyways i’ve been reading your thoughts and answers ever since i first started looking at this forum since you contribute to basically any worth while conversation. I love your stuff!

  9. Alright so I am new here and tried asking this question when i introduced myself. Basically I was referred here haha. I can’t figure out how to quote myself yet so i just copies my original post: Alright so first off i’m new here so hi! I’ll get right into it: Brandon is pretty much a genius, he is so talented and one of the things that has always impressed me is the way he incorporates physics into his systems of magic, and not even just physics, but a detailed explanation and a set of logical rules that are paired with any magic system. It’s so refreshing. There are of course a few things that I am confused by every once in a while though. Why, when Wax increases his weight, does he not become super strong? And before you get confused since it is apparent that he does absolutely become strong anough to be essentially immune to the effects of his increased mass, here is what I mean. When Wax taps his weightmind his body becomes more sturday and strong enough to support all this new weight. When he makes himself heavier he can still walk around fine, and if he is strong enough to lift a 50 lb weight when he is at normal weight, he can do it just as easily when he is twice his weight. however If Wax can do let’s say 100 push-ups normally, he is able to push around bad guys using that strength that he gets from doing push-ups. That is pretty straight forward. Because of the properties of storing weight even if Wax was 5x heavier than usual, he could still do 100 push-ups because his strength is increased proportionally to his increase in weight. This is where I get confused. At 5x times his weight his arms(or pecs and triceps or whatever) are compensated by being 5x as strong. So...why when Wax punches somebody when he is tapping weight does he not hit THAT much harder?? PLUS! If he has more mass, due to the conservation of momentum, an arm that weighs 5x as much as a normal arm would obviously do a lot more damage when punching somebody than a regular arm. Let me me know what you guys think. I tried emailing Brandon about this a month or so back using his contact page from his website but never got a response (but I know he’s busy)
  10. Thanks PrinceDusty! Yeah i guess it would make sense that there would be holes in the laws of brandon’s magic. I still think there has got to be a better way to address this though, I mean, Brandon flat out talks about the conservation of momentum when Khriss asks Wax about if he speeds up when he is zippin through the air and suddenly decreases his weight. Then again, maybe I am being too critical about this
