  1. I was wondering that too, did the Bondsmiths kill their spren partners when they broke the oath? If I remember correctly, Stormfather mentioned that Dalinar breaking the bond would kill him.
  2. Indeed. And Kaladin should know that a blade of regular shardblade length (two meters) is completely unsuitable to climb up a wall of stone while cutting steps/handholds. You would never get the angle that you need to cut INTO the stone at an angle of something like close to 90 degrees.
  3. Are the dead spren really not conscious? After all, they scream in the heads of Radiants that touch them. I would imagine that they are rather in a state of undead agony.
  4. Mmh, since there is only one honorblade per set of abilities, how can there be an honorblade that gives the exact same abilities he has? Or is he not aware, that the honorblades are all giving different abilities?
  5. Sorry, but the cosmere is not my piece of cake. I can t stand the Mistborn novels for example, in two attempts I couldn t make it past the first half of book one in earnest because the Character of Vin was so boring and at the same time tedious as a person. I skimmed through the rest and found not much that interested me enough to carry on. I found that the way Vin was constructed as a character just not plausible (like having the ability to fake being a noblewoman when she was basically a street kid without an education, her upbringing coming with the low class accent and language use etc). And non plausible main character, that's a deal breaker for me. So, I like the Stormlight Archieve books, but I am not a general fan of Brandon Sanderson's other writing.
  6. Honestly, I don t care what the author in a comment to the books writes. I will not read comments by the author to be able to understand what is going on in his stories.
  7. Yes. And there were voidbringers as soon as the storm hit. Voidbringers with marbled skin like the parshmen and parshendi. The storm contained vicious red lightning. Count two and two together. Shallan is an intelligent person and the rest of the Radiants are not dumb either.
  8. They were meant to be used with the support of stormlight or shardplate. Though some normal human shardblade owners don t have either.
  9. The form of the shardblade shouldn t matter. The form of the blade in a steel blade determines how well the blade will cut or thrust and where the point of balance is (balance point further back means a nimbler, but weaker blade). For example curved steel blades are more or less cut only swords, thin, long blades like rapiers are mostly thrusting weapons that hardly cut. In a shardblade the cutting and thrusting capacity doesn t come from the form or weight distribution of the blade. So here length of blade and handle is most important. The point of balance determines how the blade handles (the closer it is to the hilt, the more nimble the blade behaves).
  10. No, just similar in looks and same in function as all post medieval military clothing up to today. No padding as protection.
  11. But in the holocaust, the Germans had quite a lot of supply for cannon fodder. Round up some random Jews somewhere, transport them where you need them by train and you fill the gaps torn by killing off the last batch. Sadeas could not round up some random new victims for his bridges from the population somewhere and transport them to the Plains quickly.
  12. I was under the impression that Syl had already taken hold in Kaladins mind when he started to feel attracted to the spear and fighting for some "irrational" reason and she was the reason, that his first attempt to handle a spear felt just "right" to him. Subconsciously knowing that using a weapon to protect people and stuff being his eventual destiny. I thought that was Syls influence, that was coaxing him towards becoming a fighter instead of a surgeon. That was before Roshone started to make life for Kaladins family miserable, when the old citylords daughter was still his playing companion. At that time he had some seasonal mood problems, that was all, just like a lot of humans here get the blues in winter, when the days are short. That s nothing really serious.
  13. Another thing that is inconsistent is the uniforms. They have warfare with mainly bow and arrow, swords and spears, pretty similar to Earth from bronze age to the middle ages, when firearms changed warfare dramatically. But we get Napoleonic era style uniforms for soldiers. As a fan of CS Forester I always end up imagining young Kaladin in his dark blue two breaster coat with stiff collar standing on the deck of the HMS Sutherland as a Lieutenant under Captain Hornblower. I jsut can't help it and the fan art out there didn't help me to get this image out of my head Now, the problem is, the warfare in the middle ages and in the Napoleonic era was quite different, therefor the different requirement for military clothing. Sanderson even mentions in the book (I think it was the quartermaster) that Bridge Four will be issued breastplates and chainmal for battle, if the need arises. Problem is, over Napoleonic style simple cloth uniforms chainmail doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. In a scenario where you are up against swords, spears and arrows you need heavy padding under your chainmail, as cut and stab protection as well as against blunt impacts. The gambeson was the solution for this. And the gambeson as the soldier's/knights basic protective clothing only became obsolete through the advent of firearms. Now I don't mind that the soldiers in Alethkar have a non gambeson everyday or parade uniform, but in this style of battle, they don't make the slightest bit of sense as combat uniforms.
  14. I can only judge from my own, personal fencing experience with a 1.3 meter two handed longsword that weighs about 1.5 kilos. It s quite unwieldy, slow and clumsy if you try to use a blade of that length one handed. Let's say a shardblade of 2 meters weighs approximately the same, 1.5 kilos, the greater length makes it even more unwieldy and unprecise to control in one hand. You need the leverage of two hands to move an object of that length with speed and precision.
  15. Problem is, right now the majority of the Radiant characters have some sort of psychiatric hangup. Renarin, Shallan and Kaladin, all three struggle with some sort of mental condition. And Dalinar is apparently a reformed and recovering Thrill addict. Then we have some nut case Skybreakers on the loose, too, apparently. And don't get me started with the mad king of Karbranth While it s not quite as annoying with Shallan and acceptable for a "seer", I feel like in a Radiant psych ward in those books. It's just too many of the main characters with too severe mental problems, that become too persistently central focus of the story development.
  16. It s only hotly debated because exactly one user proposes it dozens of times.
  17. This certain one user is spamming this thread, repeating his claims over and over, aggressively claiming other opinions as not valid, over and over again with the ever same 3 questionable arguments. I see that as a mild form of trolling that should be downvoted..
  18. No, that wasn t the case. It was stated that Moash EXPECTED them to weigh next to nothing and was surprised that while being very light for the size, that s not actually the case. Another inconsistency is that after about two weeks worth of riding lessons they sent them on patrol on horseback. As someone who has been riding a lot and giving riding lessons on occasion in my earlier life, this is DEFINITELY not going to work.
  19. Nope, Shallan knew that, it was what Jasnah suspected after her research in the library, that the parshmen/parshendi are voidbringers in a different form and can turn back into voidbringers. It was this information of supposedly dead Jasnah, that Shallan was so eager to bring to the scholars she hoped to find at the Shattered Plains. The only reason why Kaladin didn t leave immediately was that they had to wait for the other contingents from the Shattered Plains to bring with them more charged spheres. The plans for his departure should have been made in the debriefing, that should have happened immediately after their arrival. In a few days there would have been time to fix him a provisional Captain's uniform at the very least and he should not have gone unarmed, as he can't draw a shardblade on everyone who causes him any kind of minor trouble. And he needed a written authorisation by Elhokar that puts him in charge of generally any action connected to everstorms or voidbringer attacks (if that helps at all). Honestly, I'm a person with a tendency for depression, I know what it does, but in a situation like that the stress of possibly finding the parents dead should rather turn to anger and defiance than to depressed self pity.
  20. Sorry, but I dont want to read a clinically depressed main character, who is unable to overcome the condition at least to some major extent in an adventure novel. This is not some existentialist family drama, where a main character like that is suitable.
  21. He has been practically adopted into a family of lighteyes of the highest rank. Dalinar trusts him almost unconditionally, has even called him son a few times and gives him every support he can, Adolin and Renarin respect, trust and like him and Shallan, Adolin s girlfriend is a Radiant colleage who he shared troublesome childhood memories with. Elhokar, the king who he despised came to him, asking him for advice. Yes, that should get a few cracks into his psychological barrier.
  22. That s what I found odd too. In the book it comes across as if it took them 5 days in Urithiru to hold the meeting where Kaladin finally learns about the significance of the storm and the voidbringers it will spawn. The scene is on page 1095 in my ebook version. Actually, that meeting should have taken place about half an hour after Kaladin arrived from the Plains and they should have immediately made plans for what to do. For example sending Kaladin to the capital to open the Oathgate there to evacuate civilians to Urithiru and bring armed forces from Urithiru to the Capital, as he is the only one who can travel fast enough. 5 days after the event on the Shattered Plains, hysteric and desperate messages about voidbringer attacks from New Nathanathan should have arrived everywhere on Roshar.
  23. Why was Relis able to hear the screaming in Kaladin't head at all? I mean, I'm not aware that KRs have telepathic powers over other people. And why did anyone know why Relis ran away? I mean, it was in his head and Relis is not a POV character. Also, grabbing the blade between your two hands is idiotic. It doesn't give you a firm grip on it, The holder of the blade just has to pull it back a bit and then he is in the perfect position to stab you with it. From a fencing pov a completely suicidal move.
  24. Then why does he go back home to save his parents, possibly others and then, according to Dalinar s request to the capital to save what can be saved. If there are voidbringers to be fought, he will have to use the blade, so a disguise as darkeyes is pretty inevitably going to fail.
  25. A SHARDBLADE combat knife that makes his eyes go glassy blue.... A bit excessive if he just wants to scare off some lowlives.
