  1. Not sure if it's an intentional stylistic choice or not, but there is a slight inconsistency on Chapter 75, page 887, where Pattern is relaying a conversation between Dalinar and Navani to Shallan.

In most of the dialogue tags, there is reference to the fact that Pattern is the one relaying the information, e.g. "Navani's voice came from Pattern..." "Dalinar's voice said", etc. (emphasis added)

On one of them, though, it just reads "Dalinar said" (specifically, for the line "Nobody else has been able to do this"). I had to do a quick double-take on that one, as all of the other dialogue tags made it clear the voice was coming from Pattern, and this one is just written as if he were in the room with Shallan.

Not a big deal, and possibly not even an error (perhaps just avoiding unnecessary repetition?), but it is inconsistent.

  2. After writing an entire extra book to get back into the mindset of writing Mistborn, Brandon wrote another novella and had it ready for simultaneous publication, releasing 2 and a half novels (Shadows of Self, Bands of Mourning, Mistborn: Secret History) in the span of just 4 months.

Seriously, the amount of material the guy puts out is amazing (also, major props to the rest of his editing/continuity team for getting these all out in such a short time).

  3. I don't have specific quotes/references for this, but here's some info:

Brandon has at least thought about releasing a short story collection at some point in the future. He has said that if and when he does that, he would like to include at least one story brand new to the anthology. There's also a couple "convention exclusives" that feature two short stories in one volume. Firstborn and Defending Elysium are available now on his website, and Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell and Perfect State are bundled as another book. This one is still currently a convention exclusive, but there should be copies up on his website once convention season is over.

Alcatraz has the first four books published in a single anthology edition, published in the UK. If you're interested, you might be able to track one down online somewhere, but I believe that he also plans to release a second anthology with all five books in it, sometime after the fifth book is actually published.

You might also be interested in Shadows Beneath, a collection put together with the Writing Excuses podcast team, that has 4 short stories, and includes early drafts, notes, brainstorming sessions, etc. that help you see the process of four different writers for creating a short story. This is also available on his website. Not exactly what you were asking about, but it's as close as you can get at the moment.

  4. I have all of Brandon's published works, with physical copies of everything other than the anthologies and Infinity Blade novellas. Of those, most are personalized, because the only time (so far!) that I've met Brandon in person I brought a suitcase full of books with me. Totally worth the 18 hour drive (each way). Most of those are generic things, like "I am hope" for the Final Empire, but my favourite is when he wrote "Good question!" in my Hero of Ages as I was pestering him with super-fan theorizing stuff. No pictures, unfortunately, as I am writing this from work.

  5. Elantris was the first Sanderson book that I bought, although it wasn't the first one that I read. That honour belongs to Warbreaker, which I read online, in one sitting, after discovering that he would be finishing the Wheel of Time. I was worried about how the series would end after hearing of Robert Jordan's passing; by the time I finished reading Warbreaker, I was no longer worried.

Brandon did an outstanding job in bringing to a conclusion one of the greatest epic series of our time, and his own writing has been every bit as satisfying. I have read practically everything he's written - short stories on his website, any and every published novel, anthologies that he's had a short story in, annotations and deleted chapters. I've even read unpublished material, including White Sand, Aether of Night, and portions of Liar of Partinel and Mythwalker. All I'm missing is Dragonsteel, which I'd have to take a trip to the BYU library to read.

I've also had the privilege of meeting the man in person. Driving 12 hours to pick up my brother (who I converted to be a Sanderfan as well), then another 6 hours to a convention he was at in Calgary was well worth it. I left with a stack of signed books, and discovered that not only is he a fantastic writer, he's a wonderful human being - passionate about his work, caring for his fans, eager to help aspiring authors. The world is truly a richer place for having Brandon Sanderson in it, and I will continue reading everything he writes as long as he keeps writing.

  6. And the final code has been snagged by aeromancer. Hope you all enjoy!

king of nowhere: This would be the original MAG, which has "The 11th Metal" in it. The crazy tineye (aka Allomancer Jak) is in the AoL expansion book.

EDIT: Mods, how I modify the topic title? I'd like to put on the title that they've all been claimed.

  7. You could alternatively have gotten $5-off coupons from Crafty rather than the extra download codes, I believe: they might well still be willing to let you exchange them if you get in touch.

EDIT: Note that, if you choose to continue your generosity instead, this does not constitute a "reply", since I've already got a digital copy of the MAG.

    Thanks for the tip, Kurk.

I actually was aware of that, and intentionally made the decision to share the wealth around (partly because I'd already bought both expansion books by that point).

So the offer still stands. Redbird and Battah'elin got the first two, and there are three remaining.

EDIT: I realized I could just copy-paste the link in a private message, so if people were worried about giving me their email address, that's now a non-issue.

  8. As part of Crafty Games' recent Mistborn dice Kickstarter, I have a number of copies of the digital download for the Mistborn Adventure Game to give away. I received one copy per dice set purchased, and the minimum number I could purchase as an international (Canadian) customer was 6. That means 5 to give away to you lovely folks.

First come, first served. Reply to the topic, and I will PM you for your email addresses to send the download links to.

  9. Well Brandon has said that he wants to use "inFAMOUS in the Mistborn world" as the model so I'd say third-person/open-world/roleplaying game is a safe bet.

That is fantastic news! I loved the first two inFamous games, and to see that style used in Birthright would be wonderful.

I would like the ability to train/focus different Allomantic abilities (i.e. levels in Ironpulling, Steelpushing, etc.)

I would add another vote to most of Lord Pifferdoo and LeftVash's suggestions: Hoid cameo, Cosmere goodies, Eastern street slang, and an actual release date would be fantastic (disclaimer: I am firmly in the "when it's done" camp - I would rather wait longer for a better game than have it rushed out the door).

I don't want to speculate on what I want to happen with the story - since Brandon will be directly involved in that aspect of things, I trust that he will write a better story than I could come up with.

  10. The thing in the background seems like either a short story, or part of the second Mistborn trilogy. I feel like Kelsier would be referred to as The Survivor rather than Kelsier were it one of the Wax/Wayne books.

I would agree with this in general, but what if we were to get a POV from Marsh? He certainly wouldn't refer to his own brother as "The Survivor". That's what I'm hoping this means - a Marsh POV in the AoL era.

Or possibly it's a series of epigrams, written all at once before being separated out for individual chapters?
