IGetLIFTed she/her Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 This question has probably been asked before, but does traveling between worlds change your investiture? I was wondering because Nightblood fed on Breaths, but then was able to feed on Stormlight when it was transported to Roshar. Was Nightblood designed in a way that would allow it to be invested in different ways, or is investiture somehow changed when you travel to another world?
Shqueeves Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Quote Questioner Do people in The Way of Kings have Biochromatic breath and if not, how will Nightblood function? Brandon Sanderson Spoilers! No they don't, but investitures from the various magics can power magics from other systems. Barnes & Noble B-Fest 2016 (June 11, 2016) Quote Questioner How does Nightblood work on Roshar? Brandon Sanderson Well Nightblood feeds on Investiture, which is the general life-force/magic-force in the cosmere and so he can feed on basically any source of magical energy. Questioner And do other magics work on other worlds? Brandon Sanderson I've been describing it lately more like you see DC current and AC current, where they're similar things but slightly different. It is possible to make magics work on other planets, some it's easier than others. Salt Lake City Comic-Con 2014 (Sept. 4, 2014) Quote Questioner So assuming you have mentioned that it is technically possible to be able to use one magic system on another planet from a different one... Brandon Sanderson Yes. Questioner Is it possible to fuel that... Like, say could you fuel Awakening using Stormlight, or do you have to bring Breaths? Brandon Sanderson Yes, you could! Questioner Okay. Brandon Sanderson Excellent question. Now it's-- there are tricks to making it happen on each world. Some are easier than others, but yes you can. Questioner So could that allow a loophole to maybe... convert from one form of power to another? Or like from Stormlight to Breath? Brandon Sanderson Yes. In fact, that's part of why Vasher-- Questioner Vasher. I wondered that. Brandon Sanderson --is on Roshar, is because it's a lot easier to get Stormlight than Breath. Scion of the Mists Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 By "change your Investiture" do you mean like if you go from Nalthis to Roshar, would your Breath be turned into Stormlight? Then no, it stays the same. It's possible to hack the magic systems so that you can, for example, use Stormlight to power Awakening (or sustain a Returned). This takes work, and different hacks have varying levels of difficulty. However, Nightblood was not designed to drain Breath - he drains Investiture period. So if you have Breath, he'll feed on Breath. If you have Stormlight, he'll feed on Stormlight. Once you run out of easily accessible Investiture, he'll start converting you to Investiture and eat you. (Investiture in the Cosmere is basically a 3rd part of the energy-matter duality in our world; each can be converted to the others) You may want to check out the Coppermind article on Investiture: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Investiture. 1
