This started off as a random thought as I was reading on the shard but the more I think about this the more it makes sense.

Aether is the missing magic Kriss speaks of in the arc arcanum at the end of oathbringer. Its probably a crack pot idea but hear me out.

We have 2 on screen easter eggs about aether I know of both with Mriase. Also a WoB that aether is cannon. But I also think we may have seen it 2 other times. Yelg'nar. To bond with him and gain his powers you must swallow a gemstone. With roshars loose definitions I can see a crystal being called a gem stone if they really dont know what it is. But what strikes me was the crystal protrusion that grew out of Amaran and also the queen I think. But I also think its a corrupted version of it being an unmade.

Aether of night spoilers below

Spoiler

We've seen in aether their version of shard plate. The aether growing into armor and we know the spren copied what honor did by turning into shard blades. What if the idea of shard plate came from aether.

Now the biggest reach for this is connecting it to cultivation. The curse/boon thing is of the nightwatcher. Like the highstorm is of the stormfather. Its her ability as a mega spren. I dont think its directly connected to her magic system. What if the honor blades were honors contribution and the dawnshards were cultivations. But the dawnshards were to powerful/uncontrollable. Trusted to the amians to hide them away. The cook told the dying soulcaster there were secrets that would mean the end of worlds. I keep getting an image of those water tanks you get as a kid and grow crystals in. An under water "atium"/aether mine. Could hold the secrets to old fabrials and why they cant be reproduced. Aether may of been the source. Granting surges to any who can use the fabrial. Again the pesky spren copy what their their gods have done and get trapped in gemstones in modern fabrials. Most recently Mr. T said the halfshards contain a spren that could bond a knight or something to that effect.

Sorry if im all over the place in on a phone and its hard for me to write my ideas. This is mostly the core of my train of thought and most likely way off base but it was a fun distraction.

@garlick Aether of Night can only be discussed in the Aether subforum or in Cosmere Discussion (but you need to mark the title with [Aether]).

As far as Aether's magic being in Stormlight, I'm pretty skeptical.  Brandon's always referred to Aether as a separate novel, set on a separate planet, so it would be strange to insert it into the Stormlight Archive.

How many of the worlds in the cosmere do you eventually plan to talk about that we don't know about?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

...From what's been released, you've gotten almost all the important ones. There's, like, two or three ones I would consider relevant to... for instance, the planet that the Aethers, from Aether of Night, which is an unpublished book-- that's still part of the cosmere, I'm gonna do some stuff there. There are a couple of other worlds, one is mentioned in Oathbringer, just very briefly, in one of the epigraphs. There are others that I'll get to. But, when I designed the cosmere: Scadrial (Mistborn), Sel (Elantris), and Roshar were my pillars of the Cosmere story. With Yolen, the planet where it all started, just kind of being behind-the-scenes relevant. Those are the pillars of our story. Other planets will come into it, but those three-- there's nothing more important than the ones you've seen already.

There's also this recent WoB fromone of Pagerunner's signed books.

Are the Aethers from one of the Shards that we know? Or are they of a Shard we haven't learned about?

Brandon Sanderson

Right now they are pre-Shattering.

But I will probably change that.

All things considered, I don't think Aethers are a greater part of the Roshar story.

Discussion in discord recently, that I agree with, is that the third more esoteric system, is something of Cultivation's, based off these.

Honor has Stormlight and Odium has Voidlight, is there a Cultivationlight? If so, can an Invested person use it as a third magic on Roshar or is a boon/curse the only magic of Cultivation/Nightwatcher?

Brandon Sanderson

There is more! I’ll just say that, the rest is Read And Find Out. You are theorizing in an accurate direction.

At the Pixel Project event, you talked about a further extent of Cultivation's magic than just the boon and bane? Are there any people alive at the end of Oathbringer who are influenced by that magic?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Yes, Lift. Well, I guess that's a boon, isn't it? Yes, there are. But nobody on screen that has Cultivation magic, other than boons or curses from the Nightwatcher. Yes, there is such a thing, no, there's no one else on screen. But what Lift does is a hint.
