discorat she/her Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 Hey!! So I know that B. Sanderson takes inspiration from many places, cultures and religions. But Is there anywhere I could see exactly where hes taken inspiration? obviously he has gotten some inspo from his own faith (mormon). And the emperors soul was written after he was in tawian: Has he taken inspiration from any country in africa/middle east? I really love incorporating different cultures/religions and i think is pretty cool that he has done so in a totally non offensive but also subtle way. This is because a lot of authors i have read often make sure to point out that This Character Is Different Look At Them And Look How Diverse And Educated I Am! With one side character.
Pagerunner he/him Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 Over on Arcanum, you can find over 200 instances of Brandon speaking about his inspirations. There's a tag for them: https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?tags=inspirations Off the top of my head, there is a lot of Arabic and Hebrew influence on the Alethi language in Stormlight, although I'm not sure to what extent there are any cultural connections beyond that. I don't know if there is any direct African influence thus far, although Brandon was trying to intentionally invert some colonialism-related themes in White Sand. So, you might find some interesting parallels if you go looking for them. 1
