Can you force a shard on someone?

I remember Kelsier transferring power to Vin, but can't remember the specifics. Was she actively seeking it at the time?

Would it have been possible for Sazed to pick up his shards but not available them? Like holding the smoke essence of the shard (I think that's how it was described), then physical giving it to another.

I think you could not force a Shard.

In Kelsier's case Preservation was already trying to go to Vin. Kelsier simply dropped the Shard and then Preservation went to the best Vessel avaliable.

About the Sazed scenario, If he picked the Shard the amount of Investiture would made him Ascend... He can't take the power only to keep it for someone else.
