Xavien Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 Has it been confirmed that the book Honor is referring to is The Way of Kings? If not, could it be Oathbringer that he is suppose to read? Quote And finally the King. Broken by war, he seeks the past. That which was abandoned. That which he must not know. A pretty great way to learn about the past is by reading a book, particularly a book that could potentially explain what happened to the Knights Radiant, the Nahel bond, Oathpact, etc.
Pammie Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 I'd say that we're fairly certain that Honor was talking about the The Way of Kings, mostly because of Gavilar's last words to Dalinar and Gavilar's own influence from Honor. But maybe you're right and he'll pick up Oathbringer in Oathbringer and discover more stuff about the Knights Radiance.
Marethyu316 Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 My impression is that the past he is seeking is at least as far back as the Recreance, but there's strong evidence that Oathbringer was written after that (e.g. gender roles.) One obvious way in which Dalinar is seeking the past is that he is getting his memories back, but I do think it will extend beyond that. If he dictated Oathbringer, it would make more sense to refer to himself as a heretic, if he found even more shocking "truths" about how wrong everyone has been, in addition to claiming that the Almighty is dead. It seems like the author had an experience looking into Shadesmar that changed them and probably led at least in part to the writing of the book. It's not 100% but it keeps pushing me toward Dalinar being the author, at least of the preface.
Xavien Posted November 9, 2017 Author Posted November 9, 2017 Yeah I always thought it referenced WoK as well until I was reading up on some other parts and came across that line from Honor and remembered the new synopsis. On the one hand it would make sense that the Stormfather would hone in on people reading the book that Honor wants them to read but on the other it feels odd to tell someone to read a book they would already be reading, particularly since one of the visions involves Nohadon and Honor didn't make an appearance. It would have been a great time for him to jump in and say "This man, he wrote a book. You really, really need to read it."
