Kadrok she/her Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Unfortunately, you still have the same problem as atium Compounding with this method. The problem is that as you get older, staying the same age means you need to tap more age. (If you want to look 20 when you're 50, you need to tap 30 years of age constantly. Now when you're 200, you have to pay 180 years of age constantly.) As you get older, you will require more and more age to stay within an age that lets you stay alive. Yes, Nicrosilminds let you live much longer, but there's still an upper limit. Eventually it will cost more age to stay alive than you have weight, so you have to start storing your senses too. Eventually you'll end up storing all your senses, your strength, your mental/physical speed, live in a desert, eat a feast every day.. and you'll still barely be able to store enough age to not die. And then you will. Really, atium as a Feruchemical metal just depresses me. But at least it lets you live thousands of years before things get bad! It's better than the alternative. Well actually, the way MAG does Nicrosil Feruchemy, you can't access your other metalminds while storing blank investiture. If this is canonically true as well, it would mean that one couldn't use Nicrosil to pad out ones "runtime" if one needed to be constantly tapping youth to live because they would have to stop tapping youth to fill the Nicrosilmind.
Moogle Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 (edited) Well actually, the way MAG does Nicrosil Feruchemy, you can't access your other metalminds while storing blank investiture. If this is canonically true as well, it would mean that one couldn't use Nicrosil to pad out ones "runtime" if one needed to be constantly tapping youth to live because they would have to stop tapping youth to fill the Nicrosilmind. But that just makes it even worse! If we can assume Nicrosil minds double what you have, then you've got a maximum upper limit on your lifespan of ridiculously low. Starting when you're, say... 10, you age yourself to 80. Assuming you die after you turn 80, you can therefore store (80 - 10) / 2 = 35 atium-years per year average until you're 80, in which case you have to start tapping. This nets you 35 * 70 = 2450 atium-years. Next, we use Nicrosil storing and double that to 4900. Now, we know the rate of atium-usage is proportional to time exactly (ie. da/dt = t), so we do a basic integration. Assuming t in years, a in total atium-years, and at t=0 we have a = 0, then we get a = t^2/2. a = 4900 = t^2/2 t^2 = 9800 t = 99 years (rounded up). A miserly 99 years of life are all you can get, which means you lived 179 years. Better than nothing, but you had to spend all that time as an eighty year old. Atium Feruchemy makes me sad! Edit: And this assumes a perfect conversion of Feruchemical charge, ie. you can store one year of age for a whole year and then live two years younger for half a year. Other Feruchemy doesn't work like that! It has diminishing returns. Things are even worse than this! Edited October 8, 2013 by Moogle
Kadrok she/her Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 (edited) That certainly is depressing. Better just to hop over to Nalthis and get enough breath to bring you to the fifth heightening. However, there is still the problem of when you're actually storing the Nicrosil if you're spending your whole life storing Atium. As I said: Well actually, the way MAG does Nicrosil Feruchemy, you can't access your other metalminds while storing blank investiture. If this is canonically true as well, it would mean that one couldn't use Nicrosil to pad out ones "runtime" if one needed to be constantly tapping youth to live because they would have to stop tapping youth to fill the Nicrosilmind. If it is the case that you can't access your other metalminds while storing in a Nicrosilmind, you will be unable to use Nicrosil to pad out your run time if you're also relying on constantly storing youth. In other words, how much time do you gain (using your fancy maths that I don't really understand... I'm an Arts person...) by just storing youth all your life (and not using Nicrosil)? Oudeis he/him Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Although... even the Lord Ruler at a ripe old age of a thousand didn't die until he got stabbed. So presumably, if he found a comfy couch to lie on and didn't sneeze or have someone gently bump into him or something else fatal like that, he could sit there REALLY OLD but not dying for a bit to use his nicrosilminds.
Moogle Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 In other words, how much time do you gain (using your fancy maths that I don't really understand... I'm an Arts person...) by just storing youth all your life (and not using Nicrosil)? Exactly as much time as you spent storing. If you spent 70 years storing (and being 80 years old) from the time you were 10 -> 80, then you started tapping, you could live another 70. Again, this assumes perfect charge conversion, which means you can store 1 year of age for a a second, and then be 2 years younger for 0.5 seconds.
