If any of you know anything about the Emperor Claudius, then you would know that he was ridiculed for being a fool, probably supported a republic, was a very accomplished scholar (historian), and became emperor of Rome. Sound a bit familiar? I think so. Elend and Claudius are both known as the fools of the family, both come from wealth, are both very scholarly men, and both end up reluctantly ruling an empire and doing it very successfully.
