Rane grimaced as the player was swallowed in vines.

This is it. Don't disappoint. For your father.

He balled his fists, and rushed towards Tom, swinging a fist with lightning accuracy.

Tom is momentarily surprised by the aggressive approach. But quickly gets a hold of himself and grabs a spore vial as he starts moving away from Rane.

Rane lunged for the vial, throwing his entire body towards his enemy. His only way to win was to get the spores out of his hands.

He saw the lunge coming, and, instead of jerking his hand back, slammed it forward into his lunge, shattering the vial into Rane's chest. The spores inside exploded with crimson spikes.

Rane gasped as the spines cut through his shirt and chest like a hot knife through butter, dropping to his knees. Blood began to flow down his shirt. "No." he whispered. "Well," he laughed. "To the victor go the spoils." And he spat, sending a wattle of saliva at his opponent's neck. "See you in Hell." he smiled, losing conciousness as the spores erupted around them.

Tom gasped in shock as the crimson spores tore through the flesh of his hand and arm. As Rane fell to his knees, Tom's hand was dragged down as well. After what felt like hours, but couldn't have been more than a minute, before he started trying to break the spines that held his undoubtedly mangled hand in the ball of crimson spikes

Tom stops his task suddenly, he looks up and breathes a sigh of relief. "It's finally over. I've won." He sits down as he realizes this, the weight of it all sinking in.

Loud trumpets sounded all around him, and a rope ladder descended from the sky.

He looked up, still not quite believing he'd won. He attempted to work his hand free. With immense pain, several screams, and ripped flesh, he worked the shredded mess of his hand free and grabbed the ladder with his good hand.

As he ascended, he dropped the remaining vials he carried, watching them explode below him. "Goodbye, I'm sorry it had to end like this." He said almost silently, tears flowing freely from his eyes now.

He awoke a few days later, injuries completely healed. He didn’t recognize where he was.

He woke. Where was he? Right, the games, the crimson spores.

He sat up as the fog of his memory wore off. "Where am I?"

The doctor removed several tubes from his arms and chest and afterwards instructed him to sit up.

He sat up and looked around.

The room was sterile and mostly empty. “You were extremely dehydrated, though you seem to be responding well to treatment. We’ll release you into the tribute center under observation and if all goes well you’ll have the final interview in two days.”

He lets out a breathy gasp "I actually won."

"I did." He said more surprised seeming than anything else.

“Are you sure? Did you win, or just make it out alive? Will you ever really, truly be able to get their faces, their voices, out of your mind? Out of your nightmares? Can you truly, honestly, call yourself victorious?”

"Breathing another day is always a victory. The cost paid in blood will always haunt me. But I live."

“Something to think about. You’ve got two days before the interview. The president has requested that you attend her week long party in its entirety before you get shipped out.”
