She snored loudly.

Cora looked skeptical.

"What's her name?"

“Why was she so sad?”

"She was drunk. And has a very traumatic past."

Lias continued to sleep.

A young girl walked through her family’s property. She was lucky not to have been born in the undercity. Here, she was safe and well cared for.

She heard something in the underbrush. Someone trying to get her to come closer. She was no idiot - at fourteen, she knew not to interact with people she didn’t know.

However, while she’d had a good amount of intellectual training, her physical prowess was lacking, as was her knowledge that this stranger wasn’t alone.

Before she registered anything else, she registered the sweet smelling cloth over her mouth and nose. She struggled, but the one holding her was stronger. After a few minutes of struggle, her body went limp, and her eyes weren’t far to follow.

-

She awoke on a shuttle. So, that was it. They were taking her to the undercity.

She pretended to still be asleep, but it wasn’t convincing. The large man’s grip around her arm tightened, his nails biting into her flesh. He muttered instructions and threats in the same breath. She was terrified.

She obeyed.

The girl had no clue what to do as he pulled her through the dirty streets. She couldn’t run - even if she didn’t get lost, he’d catch up to her quickly. But she couldn’t just let this happen, there had to be something she could-

The building they entered was dark. She couldn’t resist the urge to look around. Men and women drinking and young girls in - they call those dresses? - dresses that only barely qualified as such. Some seemed to be mingling with the patrons, while others went up the stairs with them.

Coins jingled, and she looked to the sound. The type of man she’d always been taught to avoid had paid her captor. But why… Oh. Her arm was released, but it didn’t really matter. She’d frozen.

The sound of coins passing hands had gathered the attention of one of the nearby men. He spoke with the man who gave her an eerie feeling, and more coins passed hands. “-a little extra to break her in."

The man told her to follow. When she froze, he simply grabbed her arm and pulled her after.

He took the girl into a room. It was practically empty, with a bed being the only real furnishing.

No...

The door clicked shut.

Caution ahead. I’ll try not to say too much, but it’ll be close

He shoved her onto the bed. There was so much adrenaline coursing through her that she couldn’t even think to resist. He put his hands on the collar of her dress and ripped. He kept ripping right down the middle. Instinctively, she tried to curl up and try to maintain some illusion of modesty. He didn’t let her.

-

Finally, he left. It had been too long. All she had been able to do was let tears flow. She hadn’t even been able to scream with his mouth on hers.

The man who had bought her entered the room. She was hiding herself under one of the blankets on the bed. It was thin, but it was something. He tossed over one of the “dresses” she had seen on the other girls. Nothing else. Only a dress.

“Before anything else, you get one last request,” he said. Slowly, she glanced from the dress to him. “Nothing too large. Just one last thing."

She thought for a moment. “C-c-can I have two small ones?” Her voice barely worked.

His chin lifted. “It depends on how small each one is."

She swallowed. “I-I want t-t-to be able to keep the scraps of m-my old dress."

The man considered for a moment, then instructed the person with him to leave. He turned back to her. “And the other?"

“A-a-a notebook and a pen."

He looked at her for a moment, finally saying, “Very well.” He looked at his watch. “Most nights, you will have fifteen minutes between each 45 minute session to prepare yourself for the next one. Tonight, and tonight only, you will have thirty. When the thirty minutes are up, you are to be ready for your next customer.” He left, and the door clicked locked behind him.

She broke.

She cried and cried and cried. Maybe, if she did little acts of rebellion, he’d let her go. But she doubted it. She gathered the scraps of her dress. Did the girl who’d worn it even exist anymore? Her heart hurt as much as her body did. She looked at the “dress” she had been given with contempt for a moment before finally putting it on. It didn’t cover much, but it was better than nothing.

She sat crying silently for a few minutes. Eventually, something flat slid through the crack under the door. She slowly went over. The notebook and pen she had requested. She lifted them and sat by the head of the bed. She opened the front cover and put a single tally. She did the same at the back of the book.

She heard the jingle of a key in the door. She put another tally in the back. She wiped the tears and snot from her face and slid the notebook under the bed. She’d only just sat up when the door opened.

This wasn’t her life. It couldn’t be.

But it was.

"She knows about a lot of things, she can catch things that I can't."

"More she picks up on certain things, like unrest, that I can't because she has experience in different areas."

"You can pick any of the rooms." He gestured to them

Cora nodded and wandered into one of them. She headed straight for the bed.

She was out as soon as her head hit the pillow.
