"I can do that." He got up and got a drink for her quickly.

He could see that she was in pain, but he just didn't know what to do.

"Can you run 10 courts?"

“Oh.” Cora thought for a moment. “If we stop for a few minutes like 5 courts in I should be fine. Also I probably can’t go as fast as you.”

She drank it and, while she still showed signs of discomfort, she did not seem to be as much in pain.

"You'll be alright." He pours himself a drink

“Where- it-"

He points to one of the side wings, "The guest rooms are in there."

“Okay. I’m ready whenever.”

"Let's go." He opens the door to the abandoned factory and sets off.

Urilo left her alone.

She had to push herself to even kind of keep up with him. She didn’t say anything though and kept going.

Urilo left her alone.

She writhed.

Her body knew what was supposed to be there, what it was supposed to be creating. But there was nothing there, and the emptiness ached, ghosts of kicking, beating...

Maybe it truly was a ghost… a ghost of a child she'd done nothing to save.

TW: Violence/abuse and gore, and debatably murder. It’s a memory

Spoiler

The foot pulled back from her belly. Blood and flesh spewed out of her. This was the first time, though from the blank faces of the other girls in the room, it wouldn’t be the last.

“This means I get a break, right? I mean.. No one will want a session if they-“ But she’d been cut off.

Still only 14, she’d cried when they dragged her to the room. She’d screamed as the men’s feet made contact with her belly. Her protests only stopped when she knew it was too late, but her wails of grief carried.

For a brief moment, she’d hoped she’d be allowed to rest, to care for this life. Even given the circumstances, this was her child, and even though she’d only discovered moments before she’d lost them, she’d already started to love them. The physical pain compared nothing to the bond she’d lost.

The men left the room. When they did, the other girls came and tried to comfort her. “It’ll get better, first is always the worst one to go through.” “Your body will heal, don’t worry."

Had she the strength, she would have fought them all off of her. But she had nothing. No fire. No drive. Just emptiness and a pain that she knew would never cease haunting her.

18 times in less than nine years she was forced to endure it. Contrary to what the other girls had said, it never got easier. And every time she went through it, she felt emptier. More broken.

“Thank you.” She sounded pretty out of breath. “You’re fast.” She was quiet for a moment. “Really fast.”

Urilo was worried about Lias; he knew something was wrong, and he had some guesses as to what. He couldn't dwell on it too much; he couldn't be idle, he had things to do. A speech tonight in sector 10, then a private meeting in sector 36, then out to 47 for another recruiting. He went into his rooms and prepared to leave.

"I try to be, it helps with everything I'm trying to do. We've still got 9 courts to go. We could cut across the segments and skip about two and a half courts."

She lied on her side, legs curled. Hot tears ran down her face as she lay, unmoving, wishing to join her children.
