guess Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Anyone else bugged with the many unnecessary changes from the books to the TV series? Some of the changes are necessary and fine such as shortening Arya in Harenhal, the Battle of Kings Land,John in the North, and capture of Winterfel. You have to cut stuff out the book is too long and battle scenes are expensive for TV shows. I am also ok with moving some elements from the 3rd book to season two such as Jamie leaving with Bryne, the last episode in Kings Landing, and the others. I also understand that GRRM's use of viewpoint characters works in a book, but is limiting on TV. So they showed more of Rob and Margary. I really wish they would have spent more time on the Warlocks, but it looks like they didn't have enough screen time. I don't like Ros. I don't see the need to having a made up prostitute character. Plus the scene in the bedroom with Joffrey didn't really have a point. It seemed like they felt the need to 'hboize the show'. Which is add sex and nudity because that is what people pay for and can't get for free on network TV. I am ok with that if it fits the plot, but that is screen time they could have spent with Dany in Quarth. I also don't like the way they modernize Rob's love interest. The woman is likeable because she has the personality and values of a modern woman we can all identify with. She doesn't fit the world at all. I guess this was a way to simplify it and make it easier for people to identify with Rob.
Yados Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 I also don't like the way they modernize Rob's love interest. I guess this was a way to simplify it and make it easier for people to identify with Rob. You know, I actually kind of like this after a fashion. In the book, Rob is off page for a while and then comes back with this random girl no one cares about and you're all "Rob, what have you done?!" Because you're in Caitlyn's head and she's thinking about the ramification so you as the reader are very aware of the ramifications. Here? It's different, but not necessarily bad. I roll my eyes at her being this medieval feminist, especially since pretty much every character in the show is an indictment of the patriarchy in one form or another. We didn't need her to be the mouthpiece of women, stating everything that everyone else is living while also not living it. I mean say what you want about Cersei, but the writers of the show have taken more of a nuanced take on her than the books (skewed somewhat by pov anyhow) ever do, and it's very effective. But let's not forget, this woman's role is to get Rob murdered. Hardcore, straight-up, soundly murdered And, honestly, I think that she works in that sense. She's easily likable without being important (unless you're pissed because she's messing up canon) and if viewers are all *love* then it's going to make the stark, brutality of Rob's murder and defeat all the more effective. Has the potential to. I don't know if the execution (lol) will live up. But if they bill it as a love story instead of a tactical fubar, the ramifications might be more shocking for the viewer who doesn't know where things are headed (lol). 1
