The Great Wyver She/Her Posted May 2, 2025 Author Posted May 2, 2025 (edited) We just need one person to join, and then we'll probably start next weekish. Maybe Monday or Tuesday. Edited May 2, 2025 by Wyver
BigBadBagsworth He/him/his Posted May 2, 2025 Posted May 2, 2025 (edited) IM IN! Name: Kora (she/her) Class: Lurcher Backstory: An inventor who owns 2 gun-ish thingamagigs (schematics below) that she designed herself. Father, Hart, was a skaa artesian mechanist who, against the lord ruler’s wishes, designed new technology. Made a revolutionary discovery (which was gunpowder, but Kora doesn’t know that) but was then killed by the lord ruler’s inquisitors to suppress it. Kora’s father took a lot of loans from some unsavory people (think Joel’s dad from The Rithmatist) to make his discovery, and Kora is trying to find the people who her father told of his discovery. Mother, Marlene Falst, was a minor noble from a minor noble house who was secretly a Tineye. Kora got into bodyguarding to get the money to continue the search for her father’s lost discovery. Strengths: intelligent, knows the properties of aluminum, has ~10 pounds of aluminum stockpiled, very observant, has 2 gun-ish thingamagigs. Weaknesses: Socialy awkward, stubborn, a bit of an over thinker. Other: Connection to the underworld of Luthadel via the people who lent money to her father. feel free to shower me with flattery for my awe-inducing gun-ish thingamagigs! (thas their official name, btw. If you call it anything else, I will come for you at night with a gun-ish thingamagig or two) To be clear, Ironpulling is required to operate the gun-ish thingamagigs. Edited May 2, 2025 by Radon Needed clarification

Well... TLR did literally supress the creation of guns. I mean. Like when he ascended. He LITERALLY changed how people thought so that guns couldn't be created. Just, like, their brains are different and cannot think up guns. I might be wrong, but that's how I interpreted the part in the Hero of Ages. Also, aluminum is INCREDIBLY rare. People didn't even think it was useful slightly. Why would you get a useless metal? Edited May 2, 2025 by CoderDrag0n8
BigBadBagsworth He/him/his Posted May 2, 2025 Posted May 2, 2025 Could be wrong but I think that he found out about guns after he took the power (they were a new tech and Alendi probably didn’t have one, and being a herdsman he wouldn’t have seen them prior to Lord Rulering), at which point he didn’t have the power at the well of acention anymore.

No, he got rid of gunpowder all together. 5 minutes ago, CoderDrag0n8 said: Well... TLR did literally supress the creation of guns. I mean. Like when he ascended. I remeber Harmony saying that he suppressed any technological advancement, which would probably only be able to be done with the power. Well, I guess with coinshots it would be kind of inevitable... He was REALLY good at suppressing it. Most likely, if someone saw something that looked like a gun it would get reported. 7 minutes ago, Radon said: Could be wrong but I think that he found out about guns after he took the power (they were a new tech and Alendi probably didn’t have one, and being a herdsman he wouldn’t have seen them prior to Lord Rulering), at which point he didn’t have the power at the well of acention anymore. Im sorry, but unless your character never had it with them and never took it out, it prob wouldn't work. I would be surprised if your characters dad even managed to create gunpowder.

Rashek didn't like gunpowder because someone with almost no training could beat archers with years of experience in battle.

BigBadBagsworth He/him/his Posted May 3, 2025 Posted May 3, 2025 Quote In other areas, however, he suppressed technological advancements. Gunpowder, for instance, was so frowned upon by Rashek that knowledge of its use disappeared almost as quickly as knowledge of the Terris religion. Apparently, Rashek found it alarming that, armed with gunpowder weapons, the most common of men could be nearly as effective as archers with years of training. So he favored archers. The more training-dependent military technology was, the less likely it was that the peasant population would be able to rise up and resist him. Indeed, skaa revolts always failed in part for this very reason. The way the disappearance of gunpowder is compared to the disappearance of the Terris religion makes it sound like it didn’t vanish immediately (I Belize Sazed talks at one point about how the Terri’s religion was decimated when the Synod met in a building that was subsequently raided and they were all killed, which implies they knew the Terri’s religion, and since gunpowder disappeared “almost as quickly”, knowledge of it lasted a nontrivial amount of time after TLR’s ascension, and Scadrian brains weren’t modified, but people who knew of it were killed quickly. 1

Interesting. Thats a good point. If you believe your character could hide that gun and that knowledge from EVERYONE for their entire life, sure. But ONLY if you think your character has the strength to do that. Also, cool schematics.
BigBadBagsworth He/him/his Posted May 3, 2025 Posted May 3, 2025 My character doesn’t know about gunpowder; Kora’s Dad learned about gunpowder, wrote 2 letters to his creditors explaining his discovery, one of which betrayed him to the Canton of Inquisition, who killed him literally the day after he discovered it. The only people who currently know are the 1 person who he wrote to who didn’t betray him, who is keeping quiet about gunpowder to have a complete monopoly; the 1 crime lord has armed themselves and a couple deeply trusted guards with basic gunpowder pistols. Her mission is to figure out who this crime lord is and ask them what her dad’s discovery was.

Any rumblings of a crime lord with guns would DEFINITELY make it back to the lord ruler. Any monopolizing on gunpowder would also definitely make it back. To have 2 huge 'merchants' (someone monopolizing on it, and someone using it for crime) would definitely make a big enough splash to get the lord ruler to find them. Im just saying, I'm not sure its a good idea to deviate that much from the og trilogy. You could definitely get away with it in the other 2, but a roleplay about the first book? The Lord Ruler is still in power and HEAVILY suppressing it.
BigBadBagsworth He/him/his Posted May 3, 2025 Posted May 3, 2025 Fair. Ok then: edit is that Kora’s dad discovered aluminum and it’s properties, which is how Kora knows about it, but he was killed by an inquisitor, Kora swears vengeance on TLR, bla bla bla. That also solves the other problem you had with my character, and gives her a drive for revenge to explain why she joined a seemingly suicidal thriving crew to take down TLR.

She discovers the strange properties of aluminum (that makes more sense because inquisitors were already using aluminum sometimes) and that's her story fuel type thing.
