Mist curled around Mark's fingertips. "It's been far too long of arguing and quarreling. We need to be unified, because there are a lot of people who'll be against us in the future."

Lee nodded. "I agree, I'm glad you've worked things out."

She took a breath. "So, has anything else happened that I should know?"

He glanced at the TV. "Not much, a lot of the tribute's are just getting their bearings and moving around . . . looks like something weird might be going on in the ocean, but nothing's happened yet. No one's died either."

"So it's a quiet Games. Like ours was." She sat down next to her brother, who rubbed her back with his hand.

Lily, seeing her upset expression at remembering her games, leaned her head against Marewill's knees.

"Surprisingly," Lee said. "But I think it has mostly to do with how big the arena is, everyone is pretty far apart and getting further. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the fights were with monsters and not other tributes."

"Again, monsters took most of ours, too. I can't discount the ones who were killed, or.. the ones who were secretly sick... -but a majority were."

"In all fairness, ours was not only short but ended with most of us walking away . . . I don't remember many monsters but I may have just not run into them."

"I remember one. The Redspine."

"Oooh yeah, I think I talked to him briefly, you guys knew him a lot better then me, didn't you?" He'd been focused on Kryn and Dougella the whole games, so that's really all he remembered.

"Didn't know him well, but... When Tinker and I were on our own, we fought him off. Rather than killing us, he killed a deer as a threat. Tore it clean in half. We encountered him again later, but he seemed much more docile, at least for a time. I think the Gamemakers wanted to force him to attack us, but he didn't want to, for some reason. He asked me to kill him."

"Huh . . ." Lee said, trying to to fit that into what he remembered.

"Point is, whether we saw them or not, not many tributes of our era were killed by other people."

And Kresh?

She could have slapped herself. Do you really think I'm over that? That I ever will be?

"True!" Lee said. "I guess I was comparing it more to the ones I've heard about from my family."

She was no longer in the mood to discuss their games. She rubbed the top of her sister's head. After a few seconds, she picked her up and moved Lily onto her lap.

With all three of them next to each other, it was obvious that more than two parents had been involved. Mare had her mother's straight auburn hair and her father's green eyes, while Meron had his father's curly blond hair and his mother's hazel eyes. Lily, meanwhile, and wavy black hair and brown eyes. Under normal circumstances, it would have been impossible. Even seeing the many differences between them brought back more painful memories to Marewill.

Whatever the history of her family, everyone who mattered - and was still alive - was safe here in Moongaze. That was the important thing.

"Well... A few. Quelkin..." Mark sighs. "He could have made the capitol topple on his own. He was better than us, but... He was determined to win the games. That meant he... Well, he was trying to get us to fight each other, and was throwing rocks at us, and eventually fought us. All three of us. He was a determined man, I'll give him that."

"My point is, most of the death's weren't due to fighting between tributes. Wasn't there one who tripped on a stick?"

"Yeah, there may have been two."

"Oh yeah, I guess that's true," He said, realizing how tone deaf he'd sounded. "I know I shouldn't find myself wanting to remember more but . . ."

Mark shouts to get everyone's attention. "Everyone! I need some help, with something that a few of you may be opposed to." He pauses, looking around. "There is a group, of about a hundred, maybe a hundred fifty people who have been harassing and trying to kill the Steeles and the Rusted."

"I know that they aren't the best of people, but they have been fighting for all of their lives. I need help, from some of you, hopefully all of you, so that we can finally be rid of those who wish us harm. Or, be rid of most of them. We've tried to figure out where they're stationed, and we are increasingly certain that they are an organized, also though too well, group."

Mark lifted one hand high above his head.

"I refuse to let those who fought for me die. And you shouldn't either."

A blade forms in his hand, just short enough so that it didn't hit the ceiling, and he spun dramatically to walk out the door.

"Anyone who's going to help, follow me."

Meron looked at his big sister. She rubbed Lily’s head as she thought, then kissed her forehead. “Be good, okay?”

Lily nodded.

“You’re actually going to help?”

”I’ve been making a mistake for quite a while. I’m going to try to start making up for it.”
