She does that, making sure the vines don't have thorns. She followed after him.

She heard a crash as he thudded back to the ground.

"Ma'm . . . could you kindly make up your mind?" He winced from inside the tangle.

"Sorry, just... I need to ask; why are you here?"

"That," He grumbled, trying to straighten his uniform as best he could from his awkward position, "Is classified information from the king . . ."

He then eyed Lusha, taking in her appearance.

"Of course," she said respectfully, though a little annoyance crept into her tone.

It was evident that she was of elf descent, but her sceleras had a green tint and the tips of her ears were green as well.

"A-ah," Jerehlu said, glancing in the direction where he'd sent the last of his men, "And if they don't want you as their leader?"

"N-no, I don't know who that is, honest," He said, panicked.

They seemed to have cleared out, or have hidden again, except for the one Lusha had cornered.

"These bandits are starting to get equally predictable and annoying."

"I'm not a bandit," the man grumbled, picking himself up inside the cage. "You're the bandits, idiot."

"What do you mean?" She sounded genuinely confused.

"Playing dumb? I won't fall for something like that," His chest puffed up a little, "We're some of the kings finest."

"As far as we know, Duke Ehlu was looking to hire bodyguards. This was supposed to be our 'audition' of sorts for that job."

He let out a chuckle, "Tell me about it, you having fun with your 'audition'?"

"Not exactly. Last night, we were attacked by a group of bandits. That's why we're so jumpy and why I attacked. Jerehlu was the name of their leader."

He smiled and raised his eyebrows, the way one would when listening to a child tell an outrageous story, "Really? Attacked by Jerehlu? How unfortunate."

"Exactly sweetheart, don't go making up silly names and think it'll be a solid cover story."

“Wh-“ She kept herself from yelling at him. “Are you with the military?”

"Yes ma'am, that's what it means to be a crowns-guard," He said with a smile, "Not sure what else that'd mean, really."
