"We don't want to make enemies with the lord. Not only does he have an army, he has more resources. We get on his bad side, and our lives could be forfeit."

"Our lives could be forfeit anyway! Like I said, they'll blame us for things not going well. I'm certain they didn't expect Jerehlu to show up."

"We could call in witnesses to character. My father would be able to assure him we are telling the truth. Besides, over half of our original group is missing. That has to account for something."

"Or it would look suspicious . . . and maybe your father would be able to defend you, but not all of us have that privilege--my father is a turnip farmer who lives deep in the mountains east of here and they surely wouldn't listen to his opinion."

“We could send a letter explaining the situation. It’s still possible that this is a test.”

“Let’s just write a letter and wait for further instruction.”

If Dint were awake, he would tell Eublach (prob misspelled) that the same happened to him much longer ago, and he didn’t see it as an excuse.

"If it were a test then why did the Master and the Lady leave?"

"Wait . . . that's not what you told me . . ."

Nera set aside the thing with Eublech for the moment.

"And who would we give the letter too? Would we have go all the back to the city? Because if we backtrack, the bandits will definitely find and catch us--we barely escaped the first time!"

“To see what we would do as bodyguards in a situation we were unprepared for.”

”The nymphs. They pass it from one to another until it reaches him.”

"Yeah, but that was the point of the whole test! Why would they run and leave us un-supervised? That can't be intentional."

Nera sighed, "And how would the nymphs get to him? You really think he wouldn't have other that would stop them and misunderstand?"

“This isn’t ours. It’s not right of us to do anything to it, and it’s illegal. And nymphs have their ways. They are very capable.”

"I don't think this was intentional, and I don't think losing it will put any dent in his profits. He probably got it all from extortion anyway."

“Maybe so. But let me ask you this, why are you so willing to risk your life to do it, when seeing this through to the end could change your life? I’m sorry about your circumstances, but I can’t change those. If you get this job, it could.”

"I'm not going to get this job! I'm a massive failure in pretty mu-" He starts, then cuts himself off. "Never mind. You wouldn't care. All this is to say that I think this is the best course of action, or at least the only one I really know to take."

Her eyes softened a moment, then she sighed. “If you do this, I will return to the lord with a personal report. Not only will I describe what happened in the forest, I will tell them about this conversation.”

”I must say I’m disappointed.”

"I-" Eublech starts, face red, breathing shakily. Then, silently, he turns on his heel and walks away.

When he finally reaches a place where they can't see him or hear him, he breaks down crying.
