"I thought something similar. I thought maybe they were hiding among the bandits, but I didn't see them. Besides, they know where we're going. If we have any hope of getting this job, we need to get the wagons and their contents to the destination."

"And if they're lost or hurt? That sort of thing would work with Lady Genuhk but what about Master Igenes? I don't think that old man could walk all the way to the city."

She sighed, glancing back at the wagons which were now outlined by the slowly rising sun.

"I get your point, but I think we should look around first or something."

"I think we should split up, then. Some of us defend the wagon and some of us look for Genuhk and Igenes. They're expecting for us to run now, so if we attack we have the element of surprise. I think we should use it."

"Attack? They ran off, we should just move the wagons away from the gas and then search the woods," She said scratching her head, "Though I'm not against splitting up."

“The gas should dissipate soon.” He looked at Lusha. “Can you establish contact with the local dryads? Ask them if they’ve seen our employers?”

She nodded. She made a rustling sound with her mouth that sounded like leaves moving in the wind.

"I vote we stay together. Splitting up hasn't really worked so far."

Nera considered that.

"Well, if the dryads are looking for our lost noblemen, then we can focus on retrieving the wagons," She suggested.

Dint nodded. “I vote for this as well. Perhaps, though, when Lusha gets a response, we will send one or two people to retrieve them.”

"Smart." Eublech says, "For a..." He considers for a second. "Never mind."

up to you if the dryads respond at all

if they do, they say that it's difficult to tell because most people look the same to them and there are still bandits in the woods, but that they don't see anyone who matches the right description, and no one is traveling in pairs.

Dint thought for a moment. “Did they say why?”

He frowned. “Perhaps something was on those wagons. A magical artifact, that allowed them to flee.”

“They said most people looked the same to them, and that no one fit their descriptions.”

"That wouldn't be uncommon, especially with rich folks like these . . . though it seems odd for them to back out so quickly when they were on a mission specifically meant to hit a few bumps to test us."

“Maybe this was an unexpected event. It may have been their panic retreat, especially since some of us were going along with the bandits.”

"Yeah, they were long gone by the time we agreed to cooperate . . ." She thought for a moment.

"The bandits we fought earlier today seemed odd to me, a little too weak and straight forward. It'd be no surprise to me if they hired a challenge for us so that things could play out in a more safe and controlled way, or at least safe and controlled for them. Maybe they didn't expect Jerehlu to show up, so when they did they panicked because real bandits hadn't crossed their minds?"

"That's what I was thinking. That also explains the masks and them not wanting people to know about them. Most thieves like the fear that comes with notoriety."

Dint nodded. “We need to search the wagons, once we secure them.”

"I don't like the idea of standing around, especially if the dryads have confirmed more bandits are in the area."

She loaded her crossbow, and starting making her way through the trees again. "We should return to the wagons."
