Left he/him Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Hey, so this is my first time using this area of the forums so forgive me if I goof. When I have some free time and the inspiration I like to create cool stuff like card and board games for my scout troop, or magic systems, or sci-fi socio-political issues. I'm not much of a story or character builder, more world building and stuff. Well me and my best friend have been creating a playlist of mutual favorite songs because we both LOVE music. At some point we decided to create a musical using songs from our playlist plus any others needed that can fit the story. I'm in charge of most of it, she's super busy and it's very difficult to work together on it anyway. So what I'm doing is kind of like Across the Universe, taking existing songs but putting them into musical format. I'm just not limiting myself to just the Beatles. I'm only about half-way through the first draft, but here's a list of the songs I'm using so far. Chasing Cars- Snow Patrol Bleeding Out- Imagine Dragons I want to hold your hand- Beatles A drop in the ocean- Ron Pope You and I- Michael Buble I hope you dance- Lee ann Womack Still into you- Paramore Bohemian Rhapsody- Queen Dead Man's Party- Oingo Boingo Something about the sunshine- Starstruck I am the Walrus- Beatles Come Together- Beatles Canned Heat- Jamiroqui Hombre Religiso- Mr. Loco I don't have time for a story summary at the moment, I'll get to that if anyone is interested. 4
killersquirrel59 he/him Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) What you're talking about is called a jukebox musical (taking existing songs and adding a story in a musical format). It is hardly a new idea, having really taken off with Mama Mia. Below is a small rant I couldn't help myself from making. I'm a musical theatre actor and really hate jukebox musicals. Please ignore this rant. It is not intended in any way as a condemnation of your project, only a condemnation of the genre itself. Most serious fans of musical theatre hate them with the flaming fiery passion of a thousand suns since, quite often the story lines are incredibly contrived, the songs don't fit, and the whole production is mostly used as advertisement for whatever the chosen band's latest album is (this last point clearly is not always the case as is shown with the Beetles in Across the Universe and Jersey Boys as those bands are obviously no longer making albums). They are, quite often, nothing more than musical theatre's equivalent of reality tv: easy, cheap, and mindless. Please don't inflict another one on us. Edited September 11, 2014 by killersquirrel59 1
Left he/him Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 I'm not really surprised at any of those points, especially the contrived plots. I've been having a braize of a time trying to figure out whether to just go all out non-sense or try and actually knit it down and it's not at all easy. It's more just a fun side project between me and a friend so don't worry about having another one come at you. Thanks for telling me the name of it though, it's been kind of hard because I don't have a title for it and so there's no good way of thinking of how to define it and stuff.
