"...What?" He stared at her in shock. "It's been three days... Did they change time somehow?"

“Don’t try to lie to me.”

"I'm not! I swear, I'm not. I wouldn't... wouldn't leave you."

“You should have come for me. If you loved me you would have.”

"I waited two days after being released. I'd rather that than risk extending the time. I couldn't sleep, couldn't really do anything, but I waited. But... something's wrong. They did something to you in there. Did you really spend a year...?"

“Yes I spent a year! Why would I say I haven’t?”

"It hasn't been a year here. Somehow you were there for a year, but I only waited a couple days. I don't understand it..."

“Obviously you didn’t care enough to notice.”

"How could I possibly not notice an entire year passing? Without you? I counted every moment."

“Every moment you spent letting me rot,” she said with derision.

Tears sprang to his eyes again. "You... really believe that I abandoned you." He somehow seemed to grow ever more weary. "I should have known I'd end up hurting you somehow. I'm sorry. I... should..." His voice cracked.

"How can I prove that it's only been a few days? Maybe... I'll talk to the people at the prison? They could explain..."

“I want nothing to do with you and your lies Tayen.”

"I'm not lying!" He felt angry, though not at her. At himself, for failing her.

Should she give him a chance? She wanted to, so bad. But…what if it was just another trick?

She looked up at his face, and, even after the long year, it was all she needed. Any chance was worth anything he could do to her.

”Ok. I…I trust you, I think. Or at least, something strange happened.”

He nearly collapsed again from the relief. "Thank you."

“It…I don’t think it was your fault. I shouldn’t have treated you the way I did.”

"No. I won't." He moved toward her, then wrapped her in an embrace.

She put her head in his shoulder, sinking into the embrace and sobbing. “I’m so sorry.”

"You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for. I should have been more careful. I should have been able to do something."

“No. You were right to do what you did.”
