“Well, firstly, he wouldn’t want me to hate you for it. Second, it wasn’t your choice, and third, you deserve a chance to live, everyone does. I shouldn’t hate you because of something you had no control over.”

"Well, I at least don't understand why you care. Why you don't just let me go."

“Because you need someone to care about you. Like…like Tayen did for me.”

"What about you? Who will care about you?"

“I don’t know right now. Maybe no one for this time.”

"That's not fair."

“It’s how it was before Tayen, he was special. He cared despite who I was. I don’t know if I’ll ever find someone like him. Unless I can bring him back.

“No, I know it wouldn’t. You share a soul, hurting it more wouldn’t bring him back.”

“Don’t be. You deserve to live, remember?”

"Why. What have I done? I probably don't even qualify as human."

“You might not, but nether do I. You don’t need to do anything to deserve to live. That is something I won’t forget.”

"But do I even qualify as a person? I'm just some facade that put up to replace whoever used to be here."

“No you are not a facade. You are a person, just because you aren’t who you used to be, or aren’t who used to have your body and soul, that doesn’t mean you aren’t a person.”

"What makes a person? Memories? Connections to people and places? Experiences?"

“No, by that logic no one is a person at the beginning of their life. I can’t tell you what makes a person, but it’s not those things. And even if it were, you have memories now, you have a connection to me and this place, and you have experiences now.

His voice quieted. "Would you .. let me go? If I asked you to?"

“…not right now. You aren’t safe alone, you need someone who cares about you.”

She stayed with him, protecting him from himself as well as anything else. She tried to touch him as little as possible, but it was impossible to avoid entirely.

He took a bite of his own. “It is.”

She touched him, entering his body. What is happening?

Rex leaned against his shoulder. "Why is it so quiet here? Where are all the people?"
