The sound seemed to grow closer and more intense. Then, something plunged through the earth above and partially into his chest.

Ouch, that doesn’t look like fun.

Tayen grunted softly at the pain. The thumping continued around them, and he felt some soil get dug away around him, though he still could not see.

What should I do?

Wait and see what they want.

He was roughly pulled out of the earth. Tayen reached up to clear his eyes, and felt himself get promptly hit in the head by a spade.

Oof

Tayen stumbled away, blinking his eyes open to find himself in the woods. A cloaked man yelled angrily above him, though he couldn't parse the words. Okay, maybe not a rescue.

Yeah, maybe not. Good thing you can’t die.

As Tayen tried to get to his feet, the man hit him with the spade again, leaving him dazed. I don't know what to do about him.

Well I can’t do anything. Although if you want to kill him, then I could do something.

Oh. I don't... He paused as his pain surged. I don't know if I'm in a position to do that.

I just need a body sometime. For now, maybe just comply.

Ah.

The man picked Tayen up and began to carry him somewhere. Tayen didn't bother to resist.

Good job. Just wait for your opportunity.

Eventually, they arrive at a clearing. There were two stone slabs in the center of it. On one of them was laid a dead young woman.

Alright, I need you to go touch that body.

That seems a bit... disrespectful, I guess. I can only assume they killed her for the same reason they want me dead. She was probably completely innocent.

That doesn’t matter right now. Go to the body.

The cloaked man brought him to the second slab. There was a dagger in the grass nearby, and he used it to cut open Tayen's throat. The pain was immediate and blinding.

Are you ok? That hurts

Tayen did not respond. He stayed still on the slab, staring up at the gray sky. The man began to speak. His voice was muddled to Tayen's ears.
