Are you being used if you give to someone without being asked? If a stranger is kind to me, I am not using them. They are simply being kind.

Yet you are still using them, if not on purpose. They are choosing to be used and therefore become useful. Being used is not bad, if the one who is used retains their agency.

At that point, perhaps the word 'used' loses its meaning. If it just means someone doing something for someone else under any circumstance, it's not a useful distinction.
