Guest Galavantes Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 So TLR could tell when someone was lying to him. The in-world explanation for this was that he has been around for so long that he has learned to recognize a lie. Is this the accepted explanation for this? He seems nearly infallible with this. When I first read it I was under the impression that this was a "metallic ability" that we just weren't aware of. The Ars Arcanum of AOL mentions the feruchemical properties of drualuminum storing "connection" with other people. Could his massive compounding of connection possibly offer an explanation to this? Also as a side note it is entirely likely that compounding connection is why the steel ministry were so convinced he was a god. They would want tot believe anything he told them.
Deus Ex Biotica Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 The annotations mention that he's a smart Tineye who's 1,000 years old, and it making perfect sense to Brandon Sanderson that someone like this is impossible to fool. That said, he knew of the existence of Aluminum and Duralumin (and Electrum), so it is quite likely that he tried using them as Metalminds. -- Deus Ex Biotica

I've got no problem with him being able to read people's reactions pretty accurately, I just wondered if there was something more specific going on.
Deus Ex Biotica Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Mistborn Annotations, Chapter 36, Part III: "I figured it would make sense that the Lord Ruler would be so old, so experienced, and so powerful that he wouldn't be able to be lied to. He's been around people for centuries and centuries. It's very hard to fool him."
fyodor Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 Doesn't the actual text say that he's so powerful with tin that he can hear heartbeats, pick out facial expressions, etc? I don't find this to be that big of a jump. Also, someone who can compound Zinc would be able to think vastly faster and pick out quick reactions, etc, that someone else might miss.

I think that's pretty much what Deus/Brandon were getting at. He's super-old, super-smart, with super-senses. I have no problem with that. Edited November 28, 2011 by Galavantes
