  1. He definitely sees her as more than a basic sword, which seems to be what' helping to awaken her. I don't think he still fully sees her separate from her weaponself. I think a huge part is he still sees her as dead. Until he stops believing that, she will be.
  2. Shardblades aren't dead, and Alodin definitely will bring Maya "back to life". I think this will be part of the key that will allow all the shardblades/spren to be healed over time. I'll explain my theory, I apologize if the order of explanation is erratic, I'm doing this on my phone so editing is a nightmare, Let's start with the first part of my proof, which comes as a direct quote from Syl. "So they're all spren," he said. "Shardblades." Syl grew solemn. "Dead spren," Kaladin added. "Dead," Syl agreed. "Then they live again a little when someone summons them, syncing a heartbeat to their essence." "How can something be 'a little' alive?" "We're spren," Syl said. "We're forces. You can't kill us completely. Just ... sort of." "That's perfectly clear." "It's perfectly clear to us," Syl said. "You're the strange ones. Break a rock, and it's still there. Break a spren, and she's still there. Sort of. Break a person, and something leaves. Something changes. What's left is just meat. You're weird."' She comes out and says that you can't really fully kill a spren. Now lets look at the 2 times we deal with the potential and post severing of a Nahel Bond directly. The first time we encounter that is with Syl in Words of Radiance. As Kaladin starts to forsake his bond (thought partly unintentionally) Syl starts to lose her consciousness and starts to become much more like the windspren she is similar to. This is the inverse what gradually happens with her as she gains her connection with Kaladin in the first book. But when we see Mayalaran for the first time, we see her basically as a catatonic person with her eyes scratched out. Now we have known for many books, that intent is very important in the cosmere, especially in many of the magic systems. For example in Awakening the mental component is huge. When the Day of Recreance happens, we watch the Knights Radiant put there spren into their sword forms(drawing them fully into this realm) , and then sever their connections all at once. Basically you now have a field of currently mindless spren stuck at least temporarily in their swords form. Then a large group of people who only see these as weapons walk up, take them and start fighting. And then continue to do that for next several thousand years. They just continue to fight and fight with their shardblades. Sometimes they name these majestic weapons of death, and continue to see them. Along the way someone researching knows they used to be able to disappear and come back, and adds a gem to help make a connection that allows that to happen, making these weapons even better. Each person thinks in some way or another, "Let me summon my shardblade." Alodin is a little different. He talks to his shardblade on occasion, part of his ritual. but he still thinks of it as a shardblade. Now lets look at the viewpoints of every Knight Radiant summoning their shardblades whose POV we get. Kaladin "He rested the Sylblade on his shoulder..." Shallan "Patternblade formed in her arms". Jashah "Ivory formed and sliced through the fused's... " Renarin "...so he used Glys to cut a hole in the roof." Each KR thinks of their spren as their partner spren, in the form of a sword, and not as a sword. Each person with a "dead" shardblade thinks of their sword as a sword. As such, this view and intent is what keeps these spren robbed of their minds. Because when the connection is severed by death, those spren don't die, as shown by Syl's first KR dying which just caused her to lose awareness for a time. And we can see the more and more as Alodin thinks of Maya as a fully conscious being, and speaks to her expecting a response, she becomes more and more aware, as shown by the beginning communication back, and his ability to summon her in 7 heartbeats when he was about to die without her. The key is, when Alodin begins to think of Maya fully as Mayalaran first and "Mayablade" second, she will become fully alive again and bond with him to some degree, only needing to hear some degree of oath from him at that point, or possibly just being released to go do as she pleases.
  3. So I downloaded WOR at about 1230, and my lack of self control to go to sleep has me on page 727 right now. Spoliers following, and I don't recall how to tag, so don't precede if you aren't that far. So far I have two things that pop out at me regarding Hoid/Wit. The first happened earlier in the book, and wasn't enough of a "new" thing for me to mention, but I'll put it here anyway. When Hoid is talking in regards to women, he mentions there is only one woman on this planet his age, and she didn't like him that much. Now we know he's talking about Cultivation, and that he knew the Shards personally, I just thought this interesting. The thing I thought more interesting, is a confirmation of a minimum level of power he seems to have taken from Nalthis. It seems that Hoid has at least enough Breathes to make him a second level awakener at minimum(to go with his bead of Lerasium, his Lightweaving, and other things he has). As he is tuning his instrument he says "Perfect Pitch makes this all so much easier than it once was..." I wonder what it will take for him to convince a spren to bond him?
  4. So I have two theories on the creation of PROPER Shardblades/Plate. One theory I've already mentioned, where someone who has accepted/live all 5 of the ideals goes into a highstorm, and at the moment of infusion when that power is there, they can pull it in and create their own plate, linked to them, their spren, and the ideals, either from thin air or an existing set of standard plate/blade(leaving the opening for a possible ShardSpear for Kaladin, which would be preferable). I have another theory that popped into my head when thinking about it. Now obviously, we've established that they aren't created by standard means, as Navani mentions that they are built on principles unlike those they currently use, which is what makes them not understood/replicated. What else seems to have been missing since the Day of Recreance? People who have the innate ability to soulcast, and Nohel bonds. I'm wondering if a people who could soulcast, could create the plate and blade out of air, using stormlight, and the bond in someway. Turning the plate and blade into a physical embodiment of that bond. We know that soulcasting devices sometimes have limits, only able to turn one thing into another. Maybe the only thing that can be turned into Shardblade and Shardplate, is a 5th level Nohel bond. So without innate soulcasters, and that level of bond, they couldn't create them. And it would explain why there seems to be something missing from the Blade and Plate that remains. It isn't being used by someone with that bond. So in the one instance where someone started to truly live the ideals, and be wearing plate at the same time(Dalinar fighting the Chasmfiend) we see that link starting to form back, and the Plate starts to glow. Feel free to tear this apart and show me why it's wrong, or add to the theory and show me why I'm right(always the preferable choice).
  5. I always thought of the Dawnshards as some sort of weapon above the Shardblades, or Honorblades(which is what I believe are the blades carried by the Heralds). Clearly there are terms to the Oathpact that allow for a champion, and I figured that the Heralds would choose one of their own, or someone else if that isn't allowed, and give them the Dawnshard as their weapon in that fight if it came to that. I figure the breaking of the Oathpact is what made it so they can't get that weapon, which might be why Odium tortured them, so that if it ever came to direct confrontation, they would no longer be able to provide that.
  6. This is much like a theory I had, that I think I mentioned in a discussion once. We've established that the point at which stormlight is infused in gemstones is a fixed point during the highstorm, and not constant. This would imply that it basically fills to capacity any gemstone that is out there. You also notice when Kaladin is hung out in the highstorm, he seems to be able to sense that power as it passes. I believe that the original Blades and Plate were the last step of becoming a KR by making your own set. Think of it kind of like how a Jedi has to make his own lightsaber. I think that an KR in training would have to go out into the highstorm, and when that moment hit, if they truly embodied their 5 ideals, they could breath in and effectively create the plate and blade out of thin air, or imbue that power in a standard set of plate and blade. As such, I think the variations in style were the personal touch of the KR. It makes me wonder if Kaladin could make a Shardspear as his shardblade, since that is what he is trained in.
  7. I was just thiking, is it possible to completely destroy shardplate. It seems to me that it would be. With shardplate, to regrow it , you have to give it power from infused gems to one of the unbroken parts. So it would seem that if you destroyed all the parts without giving them power, when you destroyed the last one, the plate would be gone for good. The only possibility I see for otherwise would be the molten shards they mention when a piece of plate is broken. Do these parts have the ability to be regrown after they cool to a small bit of metal? Just some random thinking that popped into my head.
  8. I know that Adonalsium is referred to as having been shattered here, but I don't think that is quite right. Specifically because of Hoid's conversation with Dalinar right before Sadeas makes the announcement about his investigation. This is the most detailed reference to Adonalsium that is made in an official book, at least that I can think of. Chapter 52, page 2345 in my nook copy. :spoiler: "I wonder if you could do that do a man. Pull him apart, emotion by emotion, bit by bit, chunk by bloody chunk. Then combine it back like into something else... :/spoiler: This makes me think that when Adonalsium was split, there was some sort of concious control. Now what I think is, whatever cause the original holder to be seperated from it happened in such a way that the 16 holders of the new Shards(and Hoid) were present. They collectively took the power and in the process split it into the parts that exist today. Now how that happened I don't know, but it strikes me that there was some sort of concious control. Otherwise, it seems that Shards would have been more like very large splinters, in that they would have carried the full range of emotions, just with reduced power. Look at what we know. The only time intent was changed in some way was with a level of concious control, when Sazed has made Harmony over time from Ruin and Preservation. Otherwise in the cases of Dominion and Devotion, they have had their power scattered, but the intent hasn't been affected. So there seems that there had to be some level of control to the original seperation of Adonalsium. Maybe they came across this power and couldn't agree for just one to take it, and just they fact that 16 conciousnesses were trying to control it caused the split, maybe the splitting was happening anyway and they helped guide it, who knows how. It's possible that Hoid was part of the guiding, and tried to take the power too. It would help to explain how he could live so long, and the knowledge he has(as side effects of touching this power). It might even be that he saw the direction the split was taking and realized that these Shards were fundamentally flawed in the way that they could only focus on the direction of their base intent(the fact that Ruin and Preservation could only create by working together, or that Odium seems bent on total destruction), and wanted to stop that. That would also explain the fact that it seems that Hoid might be possibly trying to rejoin the Shards into a new Adonalsium.
  9. I didn't think about the exact quote from the storm. I wonder...I've seen someone(or possibly more than one someones) theorize that the Shardplate/Blades the KR had are gained in a different way, possibly when they complete their last oath. I wonder if that energy that creates the investiture in the spheres/gems, and powers the plate and KR is used directly in that moment to form their Plate/Blade. Like for Kaladin, to gain his, he would have to go out into a highstorm and speak either all of the oaths, or maybe just the final oath, and breath in at that moment just like he does to pull from spheres, but he would get a super charged amount that makes himself a personal set of plate/blade.
  10. I was just thinking about shardplate and the fact that it uses stormlight for power. Being that all gems charge to what seems to be their full power in the highstorm, and the fact the power in them is pulled to keep the shardplate intact when it takes damage, I'm wondering if a man in shardplate becomes much harder to beat/kill or closer to invincible when outside during a highstorm. If so, I imagine it would be quite useful if they figured this out. Imagine all of the shardbearers in the Alethi army attacking at once in the peak of a highstorm. They could be quite effective at decimating the Parshendi, or any mass of non shardbearers.
  11. You're right, on further reading I see that. I stand by the rest of my stuff, assuming it isn't a tl;dr for everyone lol.
  12. Ok, I think I wasn't as clear on a couple things, so I'll flesh out what I was saying a bit more. To start with, the ranks I used were random, just meant to show that Dalinar was saying something about ranks that weren't necessarily one above the other. Looking at the culture inherent, it seems that in the military, the top rank you can achieve is generally dictated by your dahn/nahn. By doing something that bears becoming that rank, you earn the increased dahn/nahn to go with it. But to go with that, a dark eyes can only progress to a certain height by nature of their eyes being dark. To go higher they need to become a shardbearer and a light eyes by connection. This is supported by what Amaram says on page 1952 in my nook copy. Now bear with me, as I grew up with a lot of military just around me(JROTC and the like). Flag Officers. In our culture, these are Generals and Admirals. Men put in charge of mutiple battalions, ships etc. Highest in the USA is the President, replaced in this case by the King(Elhokar). Ultimate authority. Next highest, and only used twice in the USA is a 6 Star General, Title is General of the Armies, in Alethi culture, this would be the Highprince of War. Overall command of all the Armies, only answers to the President/King. 5 Star General, Our society- General of the Army, Fleet Admiral, General of the Air Force. This is the Highprinces. Ultimate authority over their own troops, except they answer to the HPoW and King. These are only held by Highprinces.(1st Nahn) 1-4 Star General/Admiral- Our society are Brigadier Generals/Rear Admirals through General/ Admiral. Not sure how much difference there is between their generals at this rank, but it seems just that General is used in Alethi culture. These would command armies, generally handling one theater of war directly. Amaram is referred to as a general, and the term is used in a few instances. It would seem one must be of the 2nd-3rd dahn at the lowest to have this title. Field Officers In our society these are the men in charge of forces large enough to support themselves for a while, but generally operate under the fold of a larger group. Something like a battalion, or one carrier/destroyer. Colonel/Captain- In charge of a battalion/captain of a ship. The Alethi equivalent would be a battalionlord, which one apparently must be of 4th dahn to be. Major-Lieutenant Colonel/Lieutenant Commader-Commander- These are the XOs on ships for example. Possibly companylord in Alethkar. It would seem at the lower end, possibly 5th dahn could do this. Junior Officers This seems to be the highest rank a darkeyed can achieve in equivalence, and the lowest a lighteyed could be by nature of being "better" than darkeyes. Our equivalents are lieutenant (second and first) and captain. For them it seems to be captain and captain lord. A lighteyes lowest rank would be captain lord(equivalent to our captain, and have darkeyed captains answering to them(equivalent to our lieutenants.) Non Commisioned Officers In our society they are sergeants, petty officers. There is a bunch of them and I'm too lazy to type them all seeing as there definitely doesn't seem to be this much differentiation in Alethkar. Suffice it to say it seems that Sergeant with Squadleader below them seems to be the Alethi equivalent. Grunts Airmen, Private, whatever the hell the Navy equivalent is(right now I'm really remembering why I always hated Navy ranks). This would be spearmen in the armies. Seems most nahn can do this. It even appear slaves (those with no nahn) can too. Now these won't always be a direct correlation and the reason for that is simple, which is the vast difference in numbers. There were much fewer ranks in Roman Armies for example. But that's what happens when your army in composed of thousands or tens or thousands versus the potential for hundreds or thousands to millions.
  13. The wording of the quote seemed important, so I pulled it up to make sure it read like I remember. I think everyone is putting a bit too much connection between the two ranks of captain and battalionlord. I think they are much farther apart. It seems to me at reading the exact quote (3088 in my Nook copy) So this implies that while he is putting him in a position where someone normally should be battalionlord, he is only making him a captain. It says nothing for ranks between he also doesn't give him. To put it in perspective using normal military ranks, I read it as him saying, "Consider yourself appointed to the rank of master sergant. If I named you colonel, it would cause a whole mess of problems. (even though he should be a colonel to lead the numbers he is). It says nothing for the other officer ranks in between that he also is not appointed to(such as major in the real world, or companylord in WoK).
