Significance of Death? (spoilers)
shadowwisp replied to Faceless Mist-Wraith's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Fantastic talk by Brandon about his views and plans for resurrection and death in the Cosmere, with some particular attention to what happens at the Epilogue of Words of Radiance. I am not sure what the spoiler rules are for Cosmere threads so major Cosmere spoilers including Mistborn, Elantris, Warbreaker, and Stormlight Archive: Reddit link where this was taken from for more context. Again major Cosmere Spoilers: https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/6qcljx/wor_enjoyed_the_book_until_the_end/ To sum it up, without spoilers: -
Any one remember the back of the book for Way of Kings? I doubt Adolin will be the traitor, it will be either Szeth, Kaladin, Dalinor, or Shallan. From the back of the book for Way of Kings, the blurb talks about the surgeon, the assassin, the liar, and the highprince. It then says: Notice the wordplay, may vs will, just thought that was interesting. Also the back of the book blurbs have a great deal of significance now if you have read Edgedancer. Anyways, I think it would be too convenient/obvious (plot wise) if Szeth was the one they were referring to. Therefore it will be Kaladin, Dalinor, or Shallan. It could be done accidentally by ignorance or intentionally by not being willing to make a sacrifice. ie: Kaladin is put in position where he has to choice between Syl's life or releasing Odium. How ironic would it be if the the oaths that created the Radiants, ends up being what destroys them.

Not sure if this makes sense but could it be that Nightblood has significantly more presence in the Physical realm compared to the Cognitive realm? So a certain amount of mass/Investiture(?) that would normally be in the Cognitive realm is now in the Physical realm. Stormlight Archives Spoilers: That might help account for the unnatural weight as well as why Nightblood can't shapeshift (as far we know). Of course that would also mean that the above character would be lighter than expected and unfortunately I don't think there is any evidence of that. But on the other hand, normal shardblades probably have a bigger presence in the Cognitive realm compared to the Physical realm and if my theory is correct, that is why it is lighter than it should be. I don't think having extra investiture leads to increased weight. If that was the case the God King would breaking the floor every time he steps and probably would have crushed Siri.

The Changing Nature of Nightblood (my 5th Crazy Theory)
shadowwisp replied to FiveLate's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Wait, how do we know that corrupted breath can't be used for Awakening? Or that corrupted investure can't be used? I think I might have missed that WoB. Edit: Also while true that Nightblood corrupts any new Breaths that he picks up, his original 1000 that makes up the core of his being could still be pure. -
The Changing Nature of Nightblood (my 5th Crazy Theory)
shadowwisp replied to FiveLate's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So he tricks or coerces Nightblood into saying the commands. Nightblood can be pretty innocent at times. And if Vasher was able to do it to a traumatized child, it seems reasonable to think that they don't have to have full intent/knowledge of what is going to happen next. -
Just an fyi, there is an individual on Roshar that has the ability to absorb stormlight but to the extend of our knowledge, is not bonded to a spren. So there might be more than one way.

The Changing Nature of Nightblood (my 5th Crazy Theory)
shadowwisp replied to FiveLate's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I believe I posted this theory here before (or maybe somewhere else). Vasher knows how to erase (and possibly manipulate) memories in humans and Returned. A Returned is a cognitive shadow. Now a cognitive shadow is not a spren (although the Stormfather is spren and a cognitive shadow so an overlap is possible) but I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that Vasher can erase/manipulate memories of spren as well. Note that Nightblood is a spren. Do you see where I am going? Have we seen spren who have lost their memories before? Yup, with Syl and Pattern. Notice that as their memories started to come back, their abilities got stronger or they obtained new ones. Of course, it could easily be the other way around (correlation doesn't mean causation) but it is still interesting to note. We also know that Nightblood is not the sword's real name. That's just the name Vasher gave it after killing Shashara. Shashara gave Nightblood another name. Yet Nightblood makes no mention of his other name at all. That is kinda strange is it not? My theory is that Vasher erased some of of Nightblood's memories and in doing so, locked/damped it's power/abilities. -
Ah okay, that makes sense. I didn't realize Dualumin burned quickly.
-
Do you actually have to use the metal to become a savant? Why can't you just constantly burn duraluminum or aluminum without burning another metal at the same time? The power is still flowing into the body, it just has nothing to act upon.

STORMLIGHT SPOILERSThe Silence of the Shardblades
shadowwisp replied to Vissy's question in Cosmere Q&A
I suspect that one method of bringing a dead shardblade back to life requires the assistance of a surrogate Nahel bond. ie: Adolin will need Shallan to touch his blade in order for Adolin to talk to the shardblade and attempt to make new bonds. At the very least, they might be able to gain information about the Recreance.- 21 replies

That's a pretty nit-picky distinction.....but not one that I can argue with, your logic makes sense. Good catch! Just to be clear you are talking about the difference between a person holding Nightblood running into the mist and having Nighblood pull investiture from the mists vs a person throwing Nightblood into the mists and having Nightblood pull investiture from the mists, right? Still, at least we know Nightblood has the ability to draw investiture from the peripherals but the situation might determine if it is possible or not.
-
This WoB implies that Nightblood can pull investiture from the peripherals independent of a user. We have some potential suggestions that Nightblood might be able to give Surges based on the fact that there is WoB that Nightblood is an artificial spren and that it makes a bond with its user. Along with this interesting tidbit: Still up in the air though, but it is not unreasonable to think so.

Geniuses Wanted- Well Read Sanderfans -with restrictions
shadowwisp replied to 1stBondsmith's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Kelsier and Shai are going to meet up and work together to accomplish similar goals. One of them will probably be hunting/stopping Hoid. Both have very similar professions, a dislike for Hoid, and love a challenge. Kelsier's hemalurgy and Shai's essence marks will make for an interesting combination. Kelsier's identity and connection medallions and Shai's soulforging will make for an interesting combination. -
Oh no, I didn't mean a Feruchemical Savant. I agree with you on that part. But for Miles to get the extra Feruchemical charge for healing, he would have to Allomantically burn Feruchemical gold first before storing it. Since that healing power is directly coming from Preservation instead of the self, it then would be possible to become a savant like with any other allomantic metal. Not sure if I explained that well enough, did that make sense?
-
Still I'm not sure if body would suppress pain to that level naturally, especially since there are so many different types of pain. I don't think it is a Resonance since he was originally able to feel pain. Personally, I think he is a Savant of burning Feruchemic charged Gold. If you can become a savant by burning the regular allomantic metals, I don't see why you can't become a savant of burning feruchemically charged metals, since you are in essence creating a new allomantic metal. And Miles is probably constantly burning. He doesn't even have to worry about metal poisoning.

Very possible, WoB: " I will say that when he is fully consuming Investiture he can do some really freaky things. "

Who will die in Oathbringer?
shadowwisp replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think whoever dies in the next book, we can expect them to be permanently dead. I think Brandon Sanderson knows that he has been bringing back too many characters from death (not that I am complaining) and does not want to cheapen the "value" of death. -
I had considered that, but you need to touch the person in order lash them, right? Both the Skybreakers were already several feet in the air when they asked him if he was coming. If they needed to lash him, it would have made more sense to ask when they were on the ground.

Does Szeth have the Gravitation Surge again? Either it's very subtly implied or I am overthinking things. What do you guys think? First point: Szeth doesn't say that he is not able to come, only that he doesn't want to. The journeyman skybreaker also seems to expect Szeth to join them in the air. I doubt she meant on foot, as even Szeth admits to Lift that she won't be able to outrun them since they can fly. For my second point: Szeth is now traveling with Nale. Nale is also traveling with two journeyman who can fly. Nale can also fly. Nale is absolutely dedicated to finding and killing Radiants throughout Roshar. Szeth seems to be keeping his pace with Nale and I find it very hard to believe that Nale would slow his pace down just for Szeth. His job would be significantly slower if he had to walk or ride a horse from city to city. Therefore, in order for Szeth to tag along with the group, Szeth has to be able to fly. Note that I am not saying Nightblood is what gave Szeth the ability to fly again. It could just as easily be a Gravitation Fabrial. We have already seen a Regrowth one, why not a Gravitation one? Edit: changed title, as I realized it could be seen from the home page of the forum without specifically being in the Edgedancer forum.

And Nightblood isn't even its real name! Fingers crossed that we find out the real name in SA3, although it is more likely that we will have to wait for the Warbreaker sequel .
-
I remember reading it here on the forums, so my apologies, it seems that it is not necessarily accurate.

Yup. Ten books in total but broken up into two 5 book arcs. There is a 10 year time skip in the story after book 5. Brandon Sanderson plans on taking an extended break after book 5 though. The POV for the back 5 in no particular order are Jasnah, Renarin, Lift, Taln, and Shalash. Note that this does not mean these character are confirmed to be alive in the second half, the POV chapters could be all flashbacks before their death.

Do we know if modern day Koloss follow any sort of religion? After reading Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, I thinking maybe a rough version of Surviorism? If I had to pick a religion, that would seem to be one that would resonate the most with Koloss. On a side note: Bands of Mourning and Allomancer Jak and Pits of Eltania spoilers

Hmmm, does this mean that an alloy of Atium and Lersium would have distinct different magical properties from Ettmetal? Or would they just cancel each other out, becoming inert?
