  1. I find it greatly irritating when the sheet music obviously differs from how the pianist plays it.

  2. So, uh, happy birthday to me? I was not expecting this view to cap off the evening!IMG_3129.thumb.jpeg.e6b077041a97788260b8da586ccd1c2f.jpeg

  5. Steins;Gate is a storming masterpiece. It absolutely stuck the landing. My favorite show remains my favorite show, hooray! And Makise Kurisu is a generational Best Girl. Now for Steins;Gate 0. And I’ll probably want to read the VN too.
  6. Ah yes, that time Rainbow Dash committed industrial sabotage and domestic terrorism.

And this not long after the Mane 6 took down a pseudo-Marxist cult.

    Kids’ show, btw.

  10. The more stories I hear about weddings, the more tempting it is to elope.

I don't have many set-in-stone preferences when it comes to women--"her hair shall be of what color it please God", even if redheads are the superior being--but there are a couple things I feel very strongly about, and one of them is a strong distaste for pomp. My actual dream wedding, to which I dearly hope my partner agrees, is a temple ceremony and a quiet dinner with family.

    (Also: diamonds are stupid.)

    1. Frustration

      Frustration

A full 2/3rd of the women I've asked out are redheads. That was something I realized today, and it was entirely unintentional, but on a purely statistical note that does say something about me.

As for wedding plans: Honestly same. I mean I have to invite my friends but I'd want something supper simple. I'd much rather have a really normal wedding with a cool Honeymoon.

While I can understand the idea that not every ring needs a diamond, I just find diamonds too fascinating to say they're stupid.

    2. Slowswift

      Slowswift

Well, to clarify, it’s not that I hate diamonds inherently, just the ones that look like ring pops. Smaller stones are fine. (Really it’s the whole cultural idea that diamonds aren’t optional that bugs me.)

  11. “His being a Latter-day Saint” works just fine. It’s the name of the Church itself that ought not to be abbreviated.
  12. It's very easy to do!
  13. John Rhys-Davies is very tall. Gimli is not. No CGI was used when filming Frodo and Gandalf together. Filmmakers can be very, very clever.
  14. "If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter" is such a banger quote and it's actually a little scary just how much I relate to it.

    1. Edema Rue

      Edema Rue

Wait I love that, what’s it from?

    2. Slowswift

Great question! Nobody really knows! Blaise Pascal said something very like it, and that seems to be the earliest known attribution, but as far as I know there's no known origin for that version of the phrase.

  15. Forgive me for being a little late to the discussion, but I'd like to chime in with some thoughts of my own. Of course, as has already been well-established, Your Name is amazing, especially in regards to its soundtrack, which is to this day one of the few I'll listen to outside of the film. (Sparkle is my favorite, and is dear enough to me that I actually try to avoid listening to it regularly so that I don't ruin it for myself.) Shinkai's next films still rank as some of my favorites, even if they don't hit quite the same as Your Name. @Theory, if you haven't already, I also recommend Garden of Words. It's much shorter, ~45 mins, but is in every other respect equal to Shinkai's other work. (It was actually my introduction to him, via an AMV somebody made from it and one of my favorite songs.) Also, if/when you do, see if you can spot the characters from Garden in Your Name. (The Your Name cast also makes an appearance in Weathering With You!) Also, regarding anime music, that's honestly half the reason I like anime so much. I can second most recommendations already brought forward, and I'll add one of my own: Sunny by Yorushika. Actually, I'll just recommend Yorushika full-stop: they're one of my favorite bands in general, not just in Japanese. I was a fan well before Frieren aired and was delighted to discover that Sunny was used as one of the openings. I could go on about anime music, but maybe I'll save that for later. I've been meaning to make a playlist of my favorites for a while, anyways. (One last thing--Steins;Gate slaps. It's an all-timer for me and I haven't even finished it yet.) --- In other news, I finally got around to watching Bocchi the Rock! and I don't know why it took me so long. It's exactly as good as I'd heard--better, even. 10/10, no notes, and I'm entirely smitten with Seika.

And sometimes they’re just plain wrong, too. Not even “Yeah, I can see  how you misheard that.” Straight-up “Beethoven would’ve gotten this right, what is wrong with you?”

That has to be the best music themed diss I have ever seen.

  17. A while back I mentioned I was learning Enya's "The Loxian Gate" on piano. I've done that--it's a fairly straightforward song, mostly--and I'll see if I can't get a recording of it now I have access to an actual piano. Look forward to your bleeding ears, I guess.

Anyways, next up is "Experience" by Einaudi, and then...

Sheet Music Boss just dropped an arrangement of one of my favorite film scores of all time, so I'm going to summit that mountain no matter what it takes (and probably die trying).

(Assuming I survive the above, I want to try my hand at "Sentient" by Gavin Luke and "Your Reality" by Dan Salvato.)

  18. Every once in a while the YouTube algorithm absolutely hits it out of the park. @Edema Rue I can't put my finger on why, but I think you'd like this one. Hope I'm not wrong! And I've been craving an ambient album like this for a while, I think. This is my favorite kind of film score.
  19. I know Christmas is a few days past now, but we're still within the 12 days, so it's all good, right?

Anyways, here's an excellent carol I heard for the first time this season and had on repeat throughout:

  20. President Holland has passed away. I'm not surprised, really--he was pretty clear himself that his time was fast approaching, and I'm happy he can be with his wife now. But he was one of the best, and the church just isn't the same without him.
  21. It was already shaping up to be a solid Christmas, but then my grandmother gave me an heirloom fountain pen, and now I'm crying ;^;

It really, truly is. Now I just need to see if it still works and (hopefully not need to) have it repaired.

  22. Our Christmas program today included “Fix You” by Coldplay. (Plenty of other beautiful music as well—I always love to hear “In the Bleak Midwinter”—but this was the most notable.)
  23. Any Dragonsteel fellas want to say hi? I’ve got a bit before I take off, but I’ll probably be here the other days too.
