Would Elhokar have become Radiant if Kaladin never arrived?
Lhyllianna replied to Marabout's topic in Stormlight Archive
Early in WoK, Elhokar mumbles about seeing figures in mirrors and his peripheral vision that we later learn through Shallan and Jasnah to be Cryptics. Seeing them is what makes him so paranoid of being assassinated. His fears seem to dissipate around the time Kaladin becomes his bodyguard and Moash facilitates the damage to the balcony railing. It is important to note, though, that Wit is a Lightweaver, and exactly when he spoke his oaths is unclear (to my knowledge anyway; someone has probably figured it out though). When he first meets Kaladin and gives him the flute, he subtly uses Lightweaving on the flames of his small campfire while playing The Wandersail for Kaladin. I think that's the first time anyone has a lengthy, earnest(?) conversation with Wit, and I think the first record we have of him using his Lightweaver abilities. I'm sure the reason he startles when he first meets Shallan at Middlefest 1170 is because he can see Cryptics around her - it's possible there's another reason though. I don't recall how long after this Sadeas' betrayal happens, but I think the events are relatively close. I am wondering if Wit leaves in part because his spren prompts him too, and because he realises that the Cryptics are what's causing Elhokar's paranoia. So Elhokar, if Moash had allowed him to finish speaking the First Ideal in Kholinar, could have been a Lightweaver. Or it could have simply been that the Cryptics were attracted to Wit instead, and Elhokar is just sensitive to the presence of spren. -
--- Nice! I started with Mistborn maybe 8 or so years ago, flew through it and a bunch of his other novels at the local library. Enjoyed it, but another author had my top favourite spot for a while (Robin Hobb, she wrote the Realm of the Elderlings saga, it's so good!!)... Until I started reading Stormlight!! It is truly the crowning jewel of Sanderson's works (at least of those I have read), and the best of all fantasy - all fiction, even - that I've ever read. The foreshadowing, the way the plot and world ties into the cosmere, the characters' personalities, relationships and arcs (the fact that the way that each of them sees the world comes through in the details mentioned in each chapter!!), the worldbuilding we get alongside the characters and also a little extra at the beginning of each chapter. The fact that with the steady compilation of snippets here and there, one can get a far broader insight on Roshar than by simply reading the books. I read Stormlight to enjoy the characters and their relationships, whereas most other fantasy I've read simply because the lore intrigues me and the characters are just vehicles to explore it. The reality of Kaladin's depression, Shallan's DID, Renarin's autism and epilepsy; the respect that these are shown in the writing. I could go on, but I'll spare you lol. In short, I am rather enamoured with the series. Also, I haven't heard 'Brando Sando' before, I like it

@TwinStorm I actually haven't done the quiz yet! I found the questions - phrasing and quantity - a bit overwhelming last time I looked. I've been meaning to do it tho! --- @LIV_SB-DustBringer Nice! Are you new to the series/Cosmere as well? How far have you read? Ah, I'm Sapphic too! Always good to meet other folks of a similar persuasion around --- @Through The Living Glass I don't know if I have one so far I do have a particular affection for Pattern though! I love imagining the way he talks and hums, especially when he's in the early stages of (re?)gaining sapience. His lack of awareness of human social conventions and figures of speech is very autistic-coded, so I feel an affinity with him for that. I did find in early WoK that Elhokar mentions seeing figures similar to the Cryptics Shallan describes later. It devastated me to realise he would've been a Lightweaver. [Storm] Moash. Do you have a favourite spren? --- @Xiahida *consults aforementioned spreadsheet* Nimbleform, I think. My IRL Calling is animal science - specifically behaviour and psychology for rehabilitation, so the deftness it offers would be good for animal handling; it also seems the most multi-purpose of the forms. I would love to try scholarform for its facilitation of learning too! Is there one you'd like to try? --- @The sarcasm spren Thank you very much. I do have the game, but my current PC is 8 years old so I don't game much. I am saving for a new one though, so I'll soon be able to game a lot more! Do you ask as an introductory courtesy, or because there's perhaps a Realm (!! rather fitting to call it that here, eh) for members of the site or similar? --- @Aeternum Thank you!

Thank you! That helps a lot! I was just shy of WoR Part I's end when I wrote the post, and then discovered that the exact date of the Everstorm is given very late in Part I (Part Three, end of chapter 50), during a conversation between Navani, Dalinar and Adolin; So if I'd had maybe 5 pages more patience, I'd have found the answer easily!

I've been making something of a timeline based on the dates of the Death Rattles. This will require some existing knowledge of the Rosharan calendar, please look that up first if you're curious. The first Death Rattle we're given in Way of Kings, dated Shashahes 1171, tells us that, Rosharan years are 500 days long, so the Everstorm is 2 years away. Now. My problem is whether or not this statement is a foretelling of the day when the Everstorm is 1000 days off, or if Shashahes 1173 is the date of the Everstorm. This has caused me an amount of grief, because my original interpretation of the Death Rattle was the latter. The reason for that grief is that if we assume the latter is true and align events in WoK and WoR to the Death Rattle dates, Adolin's duel with Elit, which is scheduled from the challenge, which is given 38 days before the (the day after the glyphs, appear in Dalinar's chambers); it must be given on Vevel [edit: Palahel*] or Jesel for the duel to occur on Chachel (depending on whether we count from Jesel or including Jesel), but is actually given on a Chachel (if we assume that Shashahes occurs on Jesel; it would make sense that it does). I am doing a re-read and my memory is like soup these days so while I'm confident the glyph countdowns refer to the Everstorm, I may have misattributed them. I do vaguely remember something about the Everstorm starting in early 1174 or later in 1173, so Shashahes, being in the sixth month, is possibly not the actual date. I made a whole spreadsheet of this; I know someone else already did and they went way more in-depth than I did, but figuring out certain little details is fun for me - until it goes awry, as it seems to have done. Please let me know your thoughts on this. I have read up to and including Rhythm of War, and both novellas (Edgedancer and Dawnshard), but none of the Wind and Truth preview chapters and don't want spoilers for them, so please be mindful of that as relevant to any reply. I'll likely edit this to update with context and the like later, I'm a little tired at the moment and that can mean I omit important details.

How did Dalinar capture the thrill exactly?
Lhyllianna replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
If we consider spren a form of Investiture (which is speculative on my part based on their connection to Cultivation and Honor, but may well be incorrect), and then also consider the MoI from the planet in Sunlit Man (spoilered because it a major plot point of the novel; first spoiler is vague, second is specific) , then perhaps the Stormlight has to be drained for there to be "space" within the gemstone for the spren. Or spren are made of condensed Investiture in such a way that the Stormlight prevents the gem from cracking when it enters? That second theory doesn't really work here though. The Thrill has always been attracted to Dalinar (or perhaps vice versa), as several other replies point out, and Dalinar reliving his memories from times he was under the influence of the Thrill may be enough to entice the Thrill to him. Nergaoul may also simply be too large to cohabitate with Stormlight inside even that large of a gem. Stormlight may also provide an amount of nourishment to manifested spren, although my memory is hazy on certain details that would clarify that. That's all a little scattered, this is an interesting question. -
Less of a typo, more of a technicality. Apologies in advance, I didn't note the page numbers but if they're strictly required I can fish them out [edit: I got curious and went looking]. In TWoK (Gollancz 2011 paperback edition [Part II chapter 56 page 270+275]) and WoR (Gollancz 2015 paperback edition [Part I chapter 29 page 375]), Dalinar and Sadeas respectively use their knees to direct their horses. This is very poor equitation form, as gripping with your knees shifts your centre of gravity higher, which is dangerous because it can cause you to topple forwards at higher gaits. The proper/safe way is to grip the horse's flanks with your calves, and tighten your grip briefly to cue the horse forwards. Failing that, you'd do the same and add a nudge with your heels. Being highprinces, the two - and their horses - would have received a solid education in equitation. This means it would be unusual for them to grip with their knees, and if they did their horses are most likely to stop moving at all, especially Gallant, being Ryshadium. The vestiges of memory give me reason to think that the instance with Dalinar is in battle on the Shattered Plains, and that the moment with Sadeas is later and separate, when he stops at one end of Bridge Four to look back at something; I don't believe it's during his betrayal of Dalinar at The Tower though [he's not on the bridge, he's talking to Amaram after going on one of his plateau runs defiant of King Elhokar's orders of cooperation; god, he's such a vain little worm]. From what I do recall of the wording, these would require very small tweaks - perhaps even as simple as swapping out "knees" with "calves" or "heels". Dalinar - "He directed Gallant with his *knees* [calves], performing an expert side-swing, cutting through the necks of two Parshendi, then the arm of a third." + "Hooves beat a thunder upon the rocks; Dalinar urged Gallant on with his *knees* [calves/heels]." Sadeas - "With a squeeze of the *knees* [calves], Sadeas started his horse forward, leaving Amaram behind for the moment." As a (newly) resident neurodivergent equine enthusiast, its correction would bring me some joy; it is very minor though, so I understand if the decision is made not to address it for future editions.

I'm mostly here for Stormlight Archive, and will likely simply lurk in the relevant streams for that, but I may skulk through other Cosmere tidbits occasionally. There is some medical context behind my low engagement, so please do not mistake that for lack of enthusiasm - I have the many spreadsheet pages to prove otherwise! Unfortunately, they aren't really in a state to be shared with all and sundry, there's a good deal of half-finished maths and messy shorthand in there; the medical stuff affects my memory, so I'm doing a notes-intensive re-read of the series ahead of Wind and Truth's release - I probably won't be done by the time it's out, but I'd rather actually know what's going on when I do read it than speed through. The foreshadowing is absolutely mind-blowing. Did y'all know that in WoR, there's a chapter with the bridgemen and Kaladin discussing where Teft got to, and then the next chapter is Shallan conversing with Tyn while Tyn "gets on the moss"? I was so agog when I noticed it that I sputtered. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.
