I’m biased since I’m a bookseller, but I always suggest ordering through a local indie bookstore near you! Many will have signed copies ordered that will be first come first serve for special orders. It might be worth emailing a few indies near you (if you’re lucky enough to live in a city with multiple indie bookstores) to see if they’ll have signed copies. On the industry side, book’s almost always publish on Tuesdays. With Wind and Truth releasing on a Friday, Macmillan is basically promising retailers that they’ll get them the books on time. It’s a very safe assumption that any brick and mortar retailer will have the books on release day (B&N, Indies, BAM, etc). Heck my bookstore is even opening early and hosting a release party!

Forgive me for not having the quote, but I remember someone in WOR or OB (maybe the storm father?) commenting on the Desolations, that the Herald’s return and then there is a short delay before the Fused follow. Could it be that Taln in his madness did not return when the other herald (probably Chana) broke and returned, and stayed longer than he could have? it could explain “Taln never broke” as well as why he returned at such an odd time Do we know when the Everstorm was broken off of Braize? It could be an interesting twist is a Herald (Chana) who abandoned the Oathpact broke, and rather than allowing a full return, it opened up a way for Odium to break the Everstorm off of Braize to force a return without Taln breaking. (Taln being the primary bearer of the Oathpact at that point. I know the other Heralds are still connected to it, but weakly)

Now I can only imagine the Tension Fused Brand as stretching like Luffy from One Piece

I respect the right to disagree with people, (I’m not 100% convinced of Adolin as a lifebinder myself), but I think there’s a way to disagree in a more constructive way. If you disagree with a theory or think it lacks evidence, explain why you think that! Share WOBs or quotes that you feel disprove or weaken a theory. We’re all here to discuss topics for a reason! Mostly, I think it’s important to be respectful of people’s opinions and theories, even when we disagree with them. 17S has a great Etiquette guide for discussions here:

As someone who reads a lot, Non-romance books, Sanderson and Romance books alike, Brandon has never been AMAZING at Romance. He’s definitely better than most Fantasy/High Fantasy writers. He writes good romances, but not great or amazing ones. Yumi/Painter is the best he’s done so far. It’s hard to compare his romance writing though, especially because the people who write better romance than him (eg Sally Rooney, Jane Austen, Haruki Murakami) usually center books on a romance, rather than having it be a side plot to a larger story like he does. what Sanderson does do extremely extremely well, is have his romances fit effectively into his plots to build impact for other moment's.

A point in favor of the compass using connection: The compass facial is built around a Heliodor, the Bondsmith Polestone. A bondsmith could have formed a connection between a spren and the grand knell, and then formed a fabrial out of that spren designed to follow the path of that connection in the cognitive realm.
-
The Fuswd don’t correlate to Radiant Orders that way. The Nex-Im are the Fused with access to Transportation, but we haven’t seen them be able to use it to move between realms. Lezian (The pursuer) only ever moves within the physical realm, even when he is running away from Kaladin during the occupation of Urithiru. It’s more likely that the character’s assumption that the army came through Cultivation’s perpendicularity is correct.
-
I think one issue is that the compass doesn’t point towards Urithiru, they’re using the angle relative to their position to ascertain direction. There being multiple of these ancient fabrials locked away in the tower makes me think it isn’t honor who is the god whose death formed the grand knell. Honor was protractedly dying around the time of the sealing of BAM, after which the sibling locked Urithiru down and Honor was splintered. multiple of these compasses would have to have been made in what seems to be a very short gap of time for them to point to the spot Honor died. More likely I think that the Grand Knell is a distant point in the cognitive realm, outside the rosharan subastral, marking where Adonalsium was shattered. If it was simply a compass pointing to Urithiru, Drehy wouldn’t have to have done the angle mapping, and he’d be much more sure of where they were going. Also, if Honor died at Urithiru and the compass pointed to Urithiru, the sibling probably would have said “it points back here” and not creepy crap about the death of a god. (Also, the sibling saying god, and not honor also seems like it isn’t honor’s death spot)

I think you’re in the wrong topic by mistake. You’re discussing content from chapters 10 and 11, but this is the topic for 7-9. you want the topic here:
-
another possibility would be an ambush in concert with a ground assault. If they put enough pressure on Azimir in the physical realm, Dalinar could go to back up the Radiants defending, and the invasion force could come through his perpendicularity

Why is nobody commenting on this in Tress?
Etedbert replied to Firesong's topic in Tress of the Emerald Sea
It would definitely be close, but Singers notably have black sclera with no irises, so it’s unlikely to be a singer since Fake Charlie is described as having golden eyes -
Aon strength issue
Etedbert replied to Through The Living Grub's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
You have a slight misunderstanding of how AonDor works. It’s true that Elantris amplifies Aons, but that’s not why Elantrians can’t use Aons when outside of Arelon. AonDor is bound to the nation of Arelon, not the city Elantris. spoilers for the section on Sel in arcanum unbound: -
I’ve never been totally sold on the Chana = Shallan theory. But I’ve always thought that if it was true, it wouldn’t be Chana killing and taking Shallan’s place. I think Brandon keeps the Shallan killed her herald mother, which kickstarted the desolation, at least faster than it otherwise would have. But I think Chana planned to die. We know that heralds return with their bodies, unlike the fused who take over a different singer when they return. In the prologue of WoK, we know the 9 heralds broke the oath pact, leaving only Taln, upholding it. This is probably why Jezrien properly dies instead of being trapped properly in the gemstone when Vyre stabs him. I think Chana’s plan was to try and return like the Fused do, to die and try and take over Shallan’s body, in an attempt to break her (capital C) Connection to Roshar and Honor, to try and get off-world. If Lin did know about the plan, I’d guess that’s what they fought about so often. Chana works with various organizations to try and realize this plan, including Nale’s sky-breakers When little Shallan is revealed as a surgebinder, a skybreaker associate of Chana’s goes to kill her, he and Lin fight, Chana ends up with the knife and moves towards Shallan, either planning to kill Shallan OR to kill herself, and try and have her soul enter Shallan’s body. Shallan then kills Chana, and the sky breaker acolyte. Chana’s soul either fully or (more likely imo) only partially, enters Shallan. Losing Chana’s Identity, but retaining other spiritual aspects. This extra soul becomes incorporated into Shallan, eventually becoming what Shallan names Radiant. A persona to protect Shallan from the truth of her mother, based on the spiritual aspects of Chana without her identity. A soldier, confident and brave, etc. Especially given the new appearance of Radiant when Shallan gives her illusion form mass in the new chapters, with a braid like Chana. And we see Radiant almost walk Shallan through re-swearing what I guess is her second oath to Testament. It’s the same second oath she swore to Pattern, but altered slightly. Radiant is then corrected by Shallan about her true “weapon” when Radiant tries to use physical force against the Heavenly One. Definitely seems like Radiant and Shallan are on different pages, and increasingly more so. Radiant has a very Dustbringer sensibility, Chana’s patroned radiant order. Also correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Radiant in red shard plate at the battle of Thaylen Field when Shallan light weaves illusions of Radiant and Veil ? The same armor color as Dustbringers. I know Chana never joined her order, so she wouldn’t have had Spren shardplate, but I think Shallan is drawing on Chana’s remnant soul’s connection to the order when depicting Radiant. again, I actually don’t think this will be the case, but I think it’s an interesting line of thinking about the Chana = Shallan theory, or I guess the Chana = Radiant theory. Now I get to wait for @alder24 to pull a crazy WOB from their back pocket that blows a hole through this already shaky theory
-
Anybody else notice Radiant looking a little more like the depiction we have of Chana? We didn’t get a description of Radiant’s clothing or the shardblade she was wielding, but her hair is in a braid like Chana, and is described as being much more muscular and strong compared to Shallan. Something you’d expect of the Herald repeatedly described as being a soldier. edit: I’ve also noticed how Radiant seems to guide Shallan through swearing a fourth ideal here. Despite Shallan saying she already said the words. It might be some hijinks involving the dual bond ? pretty sure she’s re-swearing her 2nd oath, Assumably this time she’s swearing the second oath with Testament.

I think that Glyph is meant to be a stylized version of Sadeas’ glyph, probably one used by spearmen in Sadeas’ army. Kaladin would have used it as squad leader in Amaram’s army pre-WOK. it would be interesting to see a new glyph to mark Kal as heir/ lord of Urithiru, but idk if he’d end up taking the Kholin glyphs. Which seem to be orders of magnitude more intricate than any other glyphpairs we’ve seen. (I blame that pompous a** Gavilar)

thanks!! quick clarifying question, Will it be a 3 month spoiler period following the PDF release in Q2 2025 (exact date TBD) or following the fulfillment of physical copies in fall 2025? Or one continuous spoiler period following pdf release until 3 months after physical book fulfillment? These dates are for the Stormlight books, I assume Mistborn books will follow the pattern set by Stormlight for the Mistborn pdf/book releases in 2026.

Who’s talking to Kaladin? / Who is the Wind discussion
Etedbert replied to Lord Spirit's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The similarities to other Bondsmith stuff has me thinking it could possibly be the Nightwatcher, and we could see Kaladin as the third bondsmith by the end of book 5. I know Syl dying is a popular theory, and I could see it as happening around the end of Part 2, leaving part 3 for Kaladin to swear his first/second oaths to bond the Nightwatcher. * Plus, tying closer to Cultivation makes a lot of sense for where Kaladin is as a character, along giving him a leadership role as a bondsmith without him having to fight on the front lines. * If a KR spren dies, does the radiant previously bonded to them have to say the first oaths again? Or could they start a bond with a new spren, and theoretically jump to the second oaths? eg. if a 3rd oath Skybreaker’s highspren dies, and the radiant becomes disillusioned with the rigidity of the skybreakers, and they start bonding a windspren, do they have to say the immortal words again? -
Has it been decided how we’re going to handle any new Stormlight Lore introduced in the Stormlight RPG? Will the RPG go under a spoiler period like regularly published books do? Or are we counting it like WOBs regarding backlist titles, where it doesn’t need to be in a spoiler box? If the RPG is getting a spoiler period, how should preview material be treated before the kickstarter fulfillment when the books go out to backers?

Taln’s blade theory (Wind and Truth prologue spoilers).
Etedbert replied to slavagh's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well now that GenCon started, we’ve found out that we’re getting a sort of answer to where Taln’s blade went! https://www.polygon.com/24204670/brandon-sanderson-stormlight-roleplaying-game-narrative-preview apparently, the hardcover pre-built adventure “Stonewalkers” is going to focused on the mystery of where the honorblade ended up. This quote does make it sound like there won’t be a canon answer though, and that it will be left up to the GM to choose how it went missing. I’m gonna guess that the book will suggest a few options that a GM could go with, but provide some guidance on how to create unique paths as well. so the answer to “where did Taln’s blade go?” Seems to be “whatever you think happened, happened.” -
The shattered plains were created by a bondsmith connecting an asteroid or small orbital body (the rock that eventually becomes The Tower) to Roshar and smashing it down into an active battlefield. The 10 war camps are in crater/domes created by stonewards to protect Radiant forces from the impact.

Looking at this from the real world perspective, it’s simultaneously easy and difficult to “verb” a word. (More accurately, we’re talking about creating denominal verbs). basically, in English it’s easier to make a denominal verb from improper nouns than it is to do so with proper nouns. The terms, elbowed, kneeled, and rained come to mind when you think of improper denominal verbs. using proper nouns to make denominal verbs is WAY harder. Words like that are usually super rare and very specific. Boycott is a good example, a verb taken from a proper noun that over a century came to be used regularly. A term like “Houdini’d” is an example of a word possibly on its way to full verb. Sounds funky but you understand what it means. basically, to make a denominal verb, the originating noun needs to have a pretty much universally understood meaning. the reason that some invested arts can be formed into denominal verbs easily, is because they’re partially formed with words that ALREADY have denominal verbs. Brandon can’t say “Allomanced” because the word Allomancy is formed from noun structures that don’t have their own nominal verbs already. when we as readers are first introduced to Allomancy, we have no understanding of what the proper noun means and there’s no existing nominal verb Brandon could use to bridge the understanding, so he uses other vernacular verbs instead (Push, Pull, Burn). If he went out of the gate saying “Allomanced” it would only make it harder for reader’s to catch up and understand the magic system. There’s an old study talking about denominal verbs I read a number of years ago, I can try to find the link and attach it here.

Nale being able to sense that reminded me of the 4th Heightening from BioChromatic Breath. But he’s passively sensing (I’m assuming) kinetic investiture where Life Sense is a little more picky, but seems to passively sense Innate Investiture. Perhaps part of the 5th ideal grants Kinetic Investiture sense? I’m sure it would have a better name, and that there’d be more to it. Nale’s ability to sense it could also come from Herald/CS shenanigans

Perks of a bookseller: I just finished an advanced reader copy of Lynn Buchanan’s book coming out in August, The Dollmakers! (If I knew she had a 17S account I would tag her) here’s the link to her website’s page on the book: https://www.lynnbwrites.com/books/dollmakers Spoiler Free: anyways, the book was amazing, anyone who likes Sanderson will probably like this too. It’s not quite as rules based in its magic system as he normally writes, but IMO it works really well. Her characters are incredibly compelling and the world she’s imagined is super expansive, but she keeps the scope really grounded in these characters and the people they care about. You can definitely feel the influence Brandon’s writing has had on her’s, but her voice strongly stands apart. Light Spoilers (I say the character names and stuff about them. No plot spoilers outside what’s in the cover flap blurb): Okay all in all, the book is stunning, and knowing it’s illustrated throughout and has full front and back illustrations only makes me want the full release more. I don’t often buy books I read advanced copies of, but this is one I’ll definitely buy a personal copy of. My grief with the publisher’s choices:

I’m a prophet anyways, that’s a great point! I’d be curious to see what effect that could have on someone if it ever took place.
