  1. Makes sense. Also, I would like to announce that I wish I could find a decent-paying job that lets me work from home!
  2. I rarely reread anymore, but in the cases of authors like Robert Jordan or Brandon Sanderson, when I do reread, I try to look for details and foreshadowing I may have missed the first time around. Oftentimes, I find myself understanding the plot a lot better when I can read about a certain plot event and know what it's building up to.
  3. Shardlet, you were working while taking Vicodin? How? XD When I was on Vicodin for my wisdom teeth extraction I wasn't even in a fit state to drive, let alone work. Also, I would like to announce that I, the girl who never wins anything ever, won a Super Sentai/Power Rangers helmet kit! With a bit of time and effort, and a couple of tools I don't have yet, I'll have my very own shiny helmet to display or wear!
  4. Just an update in case you hadn't seen it: Inkwing's shirts are officially available in Brandon's official store. Looks like not all of their designs are up yet, which makes me sad, but here's hoping we have lots of awesome new designs to look forward to!
  5. I like that idea! Either that, or their powers just manifest on March 1st when it's not a leap year. Or perhaps a combination of the two? They get partial-strength powers on March 1 when it's not a leap year, and then on the actual Leap Day their powers are buffed.
  6. I'd like to point out that it's not just theories that can get people upvotes. I've seen upvotes fly in particularly witty exchanges, for good recipes in the food thread, and just about anything. The important thing is that you're having fun and enjoying yourself with fellow Sanderfans.
  7. Okay, the audio isn't up yet so you guys will just have to take me at my word here for now, but I have some exciting Q&As to share! Chaos very nicely offered to ask some questions from me if he got the chance, and boy did he come through! Here's what came out of it: Question: Are all magics on Sel their own individual systems, or are they different manifestations of the same system? Answer: They are different manifestations of the same system. Question: Are all magics on Sel influenced by both Devotion and Dominion? Answer: Yes. I was super excited to get those answers! Not only are they a fascinating look into how magic on Sel really works, but they also do quite a bit to back up my own theory about what's going on on Sel. Good stuff, right?
  8. Did you mean on Scadrial? What about Jastes Lekal? Very good post, though! I'll need to read through everything again before I actually contribute anything more, but it's clear you've put a lot of thought and effort into this.
  9. Maybe if someone gets one of the tiers that comes with gift copies, they'll give one to you.
  10. So, I recently found this awesome game on Kickstarter. It's called TUG. It's similar in concept to Minecraft of Terraria, but it's designed by scientists and professors in such a way that by playing the game, you directly effect how the game is designed. How do major events progress? Which ancient cultures are discovered? What is the economy like? What is the level of magic, or technology, or science? What new items, spells, skills, or world elements will the developers implement next? You, as the player, get to decide! Also, the art is gorgeous: There are still a couple days left in the Kickstarter if you want to buy in and get Alpha/Beta access, or you could wait a while, see what all of this is really about, and get the game when it releases in January 2015. Or you could not buy it at all if you don't want to. It's up to you. Since private servers are a thing you can do in TUG, I'm thinking of starting one for Sharders when the option goes live, if enough people are interested. So what do you say? Who wants to explore new worlds together?

    Hello

Welcome to the 17th Shard! I was also converted to Brandon-ism by way of Wheel of Time, so of course I'm super grateful (for more than one reason!) that he was the one chosen to finish the series. Also, hooray for fellow Pevara/Androl shippers! For posting an intro topic, you also get a cookie:
  12. Yay, another theorist! I'm glad you found us! If your friends are fans of Brandon's as well, you should encourage them to join; as much as we like theories, we're much more than just Brandon's Theory-Mart. Also, have a cookie:
  13. Welcome to the new member! By: KChan
  14. I used to be able to answer this question off the top of my head, but I'm afraid it's been a while. I can say with reasonable confidence that Dragonsteel is 5 books, but don't quote me 100% on that. I'll see if I can look up the answer again and get back to you. In the meantime, have a cookie:
  15. Don't worry, Menden. The spikes don't hurt a bit. I mean, here! Have a cookie!
  16. You've heard whispers of it for a long time, but it's finally happening! 17th Shard Play-by-Post Mistborn RPG Campaigns are coming! We're still working on some behind the scenes stuff, so I can't open the forum right this second, but here's what you need to know: This is a special partnership with Crafty, in which we host play-by-post campaigns and they link to them. As per their request, the games will be hosted on our RPG sister site, Mistborn: The Inquisition. RPG threads will not take place in the same forums as the MBI narrative. They will have their own dedicated part of the site so people don't get confused. This section of the site is currently hidden while we finalize some stuff. I'll post again when it's open. There will be two types of campaigns: sponsored campaigns, which will be put on by staff members chosen by the admins, and third-party campaigns, which can be run by anybody who wants to run one. That means you can do it too! Accounts don't carry over between sites; you'll have to register again if you want to run or join a campaign. When you register for MBI, make sure to register using your own personal handle and not a character name. I recommend using the same name as the one you use on 17S, but it's up to you. Want to go ahead and start working on your concept and begin gathering players before the RPG section of the site goes live? Go ahead! You can use this forum as a starting point. Here are a few things you might want to work on having ready if you want to start playing as soon as the forum opens: A title, short description/synopsis, and a forum tag (make sure it's relatively short). Also be sure to keep a roster of the players who have already signed up to join your campaign! I hope you guys are excited, because I sure am! Stay tuned for more updates, and happy planning!
  17. No signings in my area, sadly. But I'll be getting the book first thing!
  18. I would upvote this twice if I could, for obvious reasons. I really want to write these two more often, especially in the Alloy era where we could play with compounding. So fun. I was actually going to post about these two as well. XD I'll have to think some more on an entry of my own now...
  19. Theoretically, yes. A lot of Identity that's talked about in Emperor's Soul has to do with how one perceives oneself, but there's nothing to say the only influence in play here is the self. How others see us can also be a very important part of our identity, so I have no problem saying it might be part of our Identity as well. RE: Dakhor magic and Dominion - despite the fact that we used the Dakhor monks to guess Dominion's name, I don't think it's so difficult to imagine that their magic is of both. They are fiercely dedicated (devotion) to their particular Dominion (their god and their faith). None of that invalidates anything you've said, of course; I just wanted to put that out there. RE: My theory and yours working of each other - According for my theory to work, the regional magics would have to have existed before the Splintering, and from what I've read, that seems to be the case. However, as I said later on in the other thread, Brandon specifically states that something about the magics works differently after the Splintering, so perhaps the convergence of the two powers is causing for greater interplay between Devotion and Dominion - resulting in, well, we're not sure what. More strict region-locking on the magics, perhaps? Good theory. I like it.
  20. What we speculated on Shardcast is that the magics were still region-based, but that perhaps the penalties for using magic outside its particular region weren't quite so severe. So Aons would be more effective farther from Elantris than they are now, etc. This is pure speculation on our part, but we think it's pretty logical. Given the name Dominion and the base form of the different magics, it seems that the magics were always at least somewhat region-based.
  21. Actually, from that quote, the order of events seems pretty clear: No Seons, no Odium. Odium shows up. Seons appear. (Odium leaves maybe? We don't know) The earthquake that caused the Reod So the Shards were Splintered (not Shattered, Splintered - yes there is a difference) before the earthquake, and there's another quote somewhere that states that the magic on Sel worked slightly differently afterward. This seems to me to be a correlation between the Splintering, and the mingling of Shards. There has been no evidence to support the merging of whole Shards without a Shardholder to focus their powers and use them together (IE: what happened with Harmony). However, Splinters, being smaller fragments, would in theory mingle more easily. Chaos talked about this during Shardkeepers, so you can hear more then. That said, I'm of the mindset that Devotion and Dominion powered Selish magic together even before they Splintered. However, I see no reason why the potential intermingling of Splinters has to be ruled out here. If it happened, I would think that it just caused the magic to become even more regionalized than it already was. Aaaaand I was ninja'd. +1 to Mr. Feesh
  22. Doubleposting, but it's for a good reason, so shush. Happy birthday, Kuri! Even though I just said it to you when you got home from work. XD
  23. There, have another rep point for your good deed. Also, your signature is out of date.
  24. It really is. Also, way to go me, writing about spren and then not writing the rest of where I was going with that thought. Champion theorywork, that. Anyways, I fixed it now, so you can actually read what I was getting at.
  25. Ah. I must have misread you then. Anyways, there's a quote somewhere that states that some spren are of Cultivation, some are of Honor, and some are of both. And Brandon just said in a recent q&a that spren function as sort of a release valve for all of the energy that would otherwise be building up from having a Shard sitting around that no one is currently holding, which is actually what the Seons and Skaze are doing on Sel. There seem to be a lot of parallels lining up here between the two worlds and how they're acting. So if we're talking about mingling, I think the idea has potential.
