  1. Lillian was convinced that he was. "Um... yes?"
  2. "Yeah... I'm okay..." She was absolutely baffled. How could a stack of pillows lift up a bookcase?
  3. She felt a wave of dizziness. "Woah... I--" She looked around to find something to support her.
  4. Rhyme frowned. She didn't like frowning, but Lati had a point. Jidah maybe didn't need this right now. She would get it later. The Game would come to her, as it does to all people. Right now, however, maybe Jidah needed some comfort. "I-- You look nice today," Rhyme said. "Being mortal isn't all bad. There's more than just the end."
  5. "I just killed a ghost," she said. "It's kinda strange to think about."
  6. She moved her hair off her neck, showing the tattoo. "It... helps me absorb the memories from the tether. The memories Franz made with his badge are what Connected him with it after death. I absorb those memories from the badge, and the badge-- it... it destroys itself."
  7. "Okay," she said. "I... don't want to freak you out."
  8. "Franz?" She asked. "Yeah, he's gone. Sorry if that was weird. I don't normally do it in front of other people."
  9. "One day, you will be forgotten by all those who love you. One day, you will be encased within the stone ruins of a broken temple, and then you will realize that you have died. The only thing that matters is making sure that you are memorable, enough to be forgotten slowly than the others. Who can last the longest? It's the person who is unforgettable."
  10. "I'll be fine... I think," she said, still holding the badge in front of her. It felt weirdly intimate doing this in front of Nick, but she wasn't going to tell him to leave. She held the badge in front of her, then sucked in a deep breath. The tattoo on her neck lit up for a second. And the badge... The badge disintegrated.
  11. "Oh. Right," she said, pulling the badge out of her pocket. She managed to stand up, her legs shaking. "Um... don't be too weirded out, 'kay?"
  12. "Oh," she said, smiling slightly. His laugh was reassuring. "And... it makes you... pass out? Every couple of hours?"
  13. "I mean... I-- well, y'know, every few weeks... but that's more than normal, right?"
  14. She nodded. "I'm sorry. I should've warned you. This happens a lot. Enrik won't ever tell me anything. I wish I could stop it, but I-- I don't even know what it is."
