"I didn't have much to do, honestly, and this much power gathered in one place always promises fun." Sirrug cocked his head at Rawiya. "Do you mind if I kill her? It feels like sort of a waste to go to all the trouble if I don't follow through." Around him, shadows began to shift and darken.

"Oh, Borutan's just not a very friendly sort," Sirrug replied, stepping out of a nearby wall. "What are you up to now, Attin? You always have the best plans."

One of the midnight hounds leaped at the Venhr, creating a twisting, writhing spiral of black and white. The other hound was caught by the gust, its essence scattered but slowly reforming.

Sirrug cackled as the sky began to darken. "Oh, this is wonderful! Let's make this a whole party!" Peering through the hounds' eyes, he spotted a familiar face. "Oh, don't tell me... It really is him! Attin, you old scamp! This is going to be more fun than I realized."

"First things first, let's see what we're working with." Sirrug raised his hands, and darkness pooled between them. Out of the depths leapt two midnight hounds, smoky and insubstantial but for their wickedly sharp teeth. They turned to their master, awaiting orders. "Hunt", he intoned, and the beasts streaked down towards the town below. Sirrug grinned. He enjoyed the chase more than even the beasts did.

As the guard re-positioned, Jasper struck at the spear with his sword, cutting off the head. As he saw the company of guards coming down the hall, he sighed and arced around again, running directly towards the larger group. At the last moment he turned sharply and ran down the branch they'd just come from. "I really am terribly sorry for the inconvenience, but this is rather urgent."

"The beast lumbered out of th' cave and eyed the girl. It was a fearsome creature, big as a house and clad in scales of sapphire. Its maw was stained red with dried blood."

"Just remember, I did warn you." Jasper dashed to the left, moving in a shallow arc around the spear points.

Jasper yawned as he put his back to the door and entered a low guard. "The two of you couldn't defeat me when I was unarmed. What makes you think you'll do better now?"

"Well that sounds just dreadfully exciting! Mind if I tag along?"

Sirrug materialized out of the mountain's shadow and glanced around. As he saw Borutan, a wolfish smile split his face. "Why, hello, old friend! It's been far too long."

Jasper absorbed the force of the blow across his shoulders as he dragged the blade free. It stung, but the mail and layer of clothing beneath mitigated most of the impact.

"I'll see what I can find, but most of the data on this device is protected. It'll take a while to brute force."

Liam reallocated all spare system resources to breaking through the firewalls, and pulled his mind from the computer. "I have a rough idea of where we are."

Liam interfaced with the computer, absorbing information at dizzying speed. Much of the data was incomprehensible at first glance, so he mentally indexed it for later reference

Jasper stepped to the left, drawing the downed guard's sword as he did. The spear swept past him, missing by inches.

Jasper released the spear, letting it swing away as he twisted out of the way of the thrust. The point still impacted his shoulder, leaving a heavy bruise. As the guard pulled back, Jasper slammed into him, knocking the weapon away.

Jasper grabbed one of the spears just behind the head and kept hold as he ran down the length, shoving the other spear aside as he did so.

Jasper made no response, instead slipping between the spear points as he engaged the guards at a closer range.

"Even if what you say is true, you will be neither the first nor the heaviest. I said that I would do what I can to aid you, and I shall."

"I cannot. I suppose you're going to settle this by way of trial by combat? So be it." Jasper takes a deep breath, steps back from the door, and settles into a defensive stance.

Liam hangs back. He can't really do much in a situation like this.
