Jasper nodded. "A most reasonable answer."

Jasper followed behind the guard, checking behind himself every few paces as he continued refining his mental map. "So, how did you get into this line of work?"

"If possible, yes. However, I'm sure he's quite busy, and if he cannot see me immediately, I'd be quite happy if you could just take me somewhere where I can wait comfortably."

Jasper followed the guard through the gate, fixing the positions of the other guards in his mind.

"You misunderstand me. I come in his stead, but he is anxious for news. Myself, I am content to enjoy the splendors of the palace for as long as I am welcome."

"Very well, pick your escort. I am in no particular hurry, but I cannot say the same for Lord D'artan."

"If you insist, but I should hope I'm not in any danger."

"Of course."

"I'd expect nothing less." Jasper drew the weapons from their sheaths, handing them hilt-first to the guard.

"Of course. I have a knife at my belt as well as one in my boot. The roads are dangerous this time of year, and I did not wish to travel unarmed."

Brother Sparrow inhaled deeply, maintaining just enough awareness of his body to retain consciousness, and opened his senses to Cumulo.

Marcus smiled. "Well, that's how such things usually happen."

Brother Sparrow whispered to Vespyr, "Strike me. As painfully and as powerfully as you can. I shall end this shortly after."

"The dragon sniffed the air, searching for the girl's scent. It drew no more than a foot away from her once, and it was only luck that she was not devoured then and there."

"Of course I'm not. Am I to tell you the news of my own arrival?"

Jasper decided to go with something approximating the truth. "I am an emissary of Lord D'artan. He wishes to discuss with the king about the terms of Lady Alienor's marriage, as it may have an impact on trade within his lands."

"What is your aim here? Have you not done enough?" Brother Sparrow interposed himself between Vespyr and Cumulo, waiting for a further attack.

Brother Sparrow's Veil twisted around him, catching the blast and dispersing it into the ground as he calmly continued. "You misdirect your energy. I have no desire to harm you, but Vespyr insists you must be subdued and I must acquiesce in this instance."

((Literally taking away his sense of sight, hearing, etc. It isn't permanent and it takes a while to fully do, but it's pretty debilitating, so if Cumulo wants to do something now would be the time.))

Brother Sparrow touched Cumulo lightly on the forehead, drawing on both his and Vespyr's pain as he began to siphon Cumulo's senses.

"Fine, then. Allow me to take matters into my own hands." Brother Sparrow reached out a hand towards Cumulo, his Veil curling around both of them.
