A furious scream and the sound of an explosion came from behind Vespyr and Janice. The ground below them erupted in gouts of various elements, almost like hands trying to bring them down. The Yevon below roared, echoing the sound of their Queen, then began to follow Vespyr's path in a pack. In Vespyr's mind, the voice comes in a shout, carrying all the rage with it. You traitor. You cannot escape me! "I... think that's something we can agree on. I assume you want me to try and recreate my work?"

"Oh yes, he'll be just fine. He had some minor concerns about his supplies, but I told him we could help out with it." The clerk looks like he wants to object, but withers under your force of will. "Allow me to at least make sure he's available. He's just in his office upstairs..." he starts looking through some papers on his desk.

Null's Reflections - An Anthology
Negative_Null replied to Negative_Null's topic in Creator's Corner
I mean, it's essentially just a fanfiction. So I don't foresee there being a problem (legal wise, at the very least.). If you guys feel like it actually makes it a worse story, then that's a different question.- 8 replies

All right, for my 2000th post, I'm going to finally publish my little project I've been working on for a while. Null's Reflections is a collection of stories that takes place in... the entire multiverse. Actually more than that. It's a multiverses of multiverses. Every possible world is fair game for these stories. I won't give too much away, obviously, but keep a look out for references, but also know that there's things from places there's no story equivalent of on Earth. There will be five arcs, with multiple short stories in them, and there might will definitely be other stories that aren't directly part of any of the arcs. I'd love any and all feedback. I've worked a long time on these characters and worlds. Won't you sit down and reflect a moment with me? Arc 1: Deadly Sins Enjoy, and make sure to let me know if it sucks or not It I don't post a new chapter for a couple weeks, please bug me to get started on the next one. I want to finish this, I just suck at motivating myself sometimes.

"Seems a bit different from what my sources told me about. But hopefully we won't be here long enough to find out!"

"Listen. We keep getting separated, and I won't leave you without a way to defend yourself. I should have given it to you earlier. If you break this open, you'll get some kind of help. The device can detect danger somewhat, and will send you whatever aid that it thinks will be best." The Queen pauses, not waiting for a reply, and looks toward her shelves and shelves of crystals. "What next, child? I'm having too much fun to stop with just one." Finally, she selects a piece of Animate Qhoral. "If you were in a questioning mood, I might expect you to ask how the essence of life will cause pain. Since you aren't in the proper mindset, I'll just have to demonstrate."

The Queen ignored Siren, instead seeming to revel in Janice's pain. "So, child." She said, removing the crystal for a moment. "Is all this worth it for you, still?"

"Please what? Spare you? Spare her? You each had your chance. She threw hers away and you ruined yours. Your failure is secondary to hers, but rest assured, I'll have plenty of my anger left to direct at you." The Queen set the crystal that contained Trace's soul down on the table. "Now, child, all that's left is you." She set a Voltaic crystal against Janice's skin, and it began sending a charge through her body, arcing between her bones and veins.

"Hmm, that's interesting. Is it attachment? Pity? It's a little late to try and be a hero, child. You have your own problems to deal with." The Queen grabbed a crystalline tool from the air and pressed it to Janice's chest. The Traces on her skin began burning as Trace's consciousness began leaving her mind. Jay placed his hand on Aryanna's shoulder. "I'm sorry, but... I have to go. I'll try and find another way to save Janice, but... I think she's out of our reach for now. I'll come back when I can." He walks away, then reconsiders. He hands her a strange looking box. "If you really need help, break this open. Whoever comes will protect you and Cadenza."

Alein rolls his eyes. "All right, all of you. Let's get somewhere quiet and we can figure out a plan. Let's follow this guy. I can't illusion us all out of the public and people will start to notice..."

"Nothing yet. Why, one might think that you're scared or something." The Queen smiled, then crooked her finger. The Qhoral began shaping itself into long bands. The Queen shoved Janice down on the table, and the Qhoral wrapped itself around her wrists and ankles, then latched itself to the table. "First, let's get little Trace out of your head. She has her own punishment to look forward to."

Inside the tower, there were shelves and cupboards holding many different types of Qhoral. A table had been hastily set up in the center of the room, and a strange looking Yevon stood in the corner. The Queen gestured, and the door to the stairs opened. A corrupted human, barely recognizable as such, stood behind it, and bowed shakily. "Siren, follow this servant and he will get you what you need." Not sparing another glance for those two, she lifted Janice up and set her on the table. A Voltaic and a Seismic crystal on the shelves glowed brighter and began drifting across the room towards the Queen at a gesture.

The Queen grabbed Janice's arm and jerked her to her feet with supernatural strength. "Come inside. I will give you what you need. I'm impatient to repay this child for the inconvenience she's caused me." The Queen walks back into the tower, towing Janice with her.

If either Janice or Vespyr had been in the mood to look at their surroundings, they might have been overcome. The Queen's tower was the highest structure for hundreds of miles, allowing the pair to see across those miles of corrupted vegetation and scorched, black earth. Gigantic Qhoral crystals erupted out of the ground in various places, some as tall and wide as a tree. The grass was a kaleidoscope of different colors, and waved in the wind strangely, some towards the wind and some against. Bestial Yevon prowled the wasteland, and in the far distance there were mountains so covered in crystal that they shone like a second sunset. The castle the two were at the top of seemed to belong here, despite the fact it could also have fit into the richest and most fashionable sector of Myria. It stood, carved seemingly out of a dark red stone, eschewing normal windows for panes of faintly translucent Qhoral. The architecture was almost unique, something that would never have been seen anywhere else on Siren. Four towers sprang out of the roof, the tallest in the center of the castle itself. And on top of that tower, the door opened at a mental command from the Queen, and she walked out to meet the two. Her presence almost acted like a magnet for Janice and Vespyr, drawing them closer to her. She wore earrings made of Umbral Qhoral, glowing their sickly grey, and wore a black gown, looking exactly as her title denoted her to be. "Good, Siren. Untie the girl, and then you may depart."

All the warmth fled from the Queen's voice. I tire of this. I would have Siren throw you off the spire, but I've invested too much time to have you die like that. At the very least, I will enjoy breaking you personally. She opens her focus to Vespyr. You will leave as soon as you are rested enough to make it. Drop her off on the balcony of my tower after making sure she carries no weapons.

It's interesting how that looks, isn't it? The same outcome will happen regardless, Janice, believe me. I am all too experienced at this game. You could continue to defy me and end up like Siren, or even worse. But see, I want you to choose. Do you remember my Dreadlords that you fought at the Halcyon Festival? You have more potential than any of those, even. I have not groomed anyone else to the degree I have you. You just need to follow the path already set out for you, rather than fighting against it.

When we're so close to greatness, Janice? You could be one of my highest lieutenants. You have been chosen and pushed along this path since your earliest years. The humans will never accept you; you're too dangerous, too different. Take a look at what my servants see, why won't you? Janice's vision goes black, and she sees a vision, of sorts. She is looking up at a television in a shop window from around ground level, and a newscaster is talking "A mysterious assassin destroyed a Raodean noble's home, killing dozens-" She is seeing a tavern or bar from up in the rafters, listening to a conversation. "I heard the assassin was some kind of Yevon mutant." "Nah, it was one of those Talon scum." "Either way, I wish I could get a whack at them before they're hauled off" Looking at the rubble of the noble manor from behind bushes, some of the workers are talking. "How could this happen? Look, this is solid concrete, turned to dust!" "Something dusting terrifying. I hope the Paladins find them quick." "Yes, Hytlera lead their path to damnation." And finally, the conversation from her friends, seeing them from under the water, the sound garbled but still intelligible. So... you could have that. A broken society, remnants of a broken world themselves, that never belonged here. They will hate you, but if you return they will use you. You will be captured and tried hastily so they can cut you open and see how your power works, why you are different. Or you could join me. Oh, there will still be hate, just look at the people that curse by my name. But you will be more than they can imagine, one of the chosen few who reshapes the world into what it could be, into what I know it will be. Deliver yourself to their justice, or to my mercy. It's just a matter of what you trust more.

Indeed they can, Janice. But experience brings wisdom, and I have lived longer than your civilization. So perhaps I do "know a whole lot of the wrong thing", of love and of pain. Siren forgets itself. You are too young to know the pain that love can bring, even when you are with the people that love you. Perhaps loss can be a beautiful thing, like that beautiful song you sang, but I think it far better to live. To live so long that all pain is a flash in a pan, to live so long that lives cut short are scarcely different from the rest, to live so long you start to forget what's been done to you. Well, child? I think you would then sing just as beautifully.

Jay walked over to Cadenza and placed his jacket around her shoulders. "Don't lose that." Taking it off exposes arms with a fair amount of scars and burns, products of a warrior's life. Pearce nodded slowly. "I see. I did have... some degree of success. My records and data were mostly destroyed, however." He looks at Xenia with a searching glance. "Would you mind adjusting these cuffs? They are rather tight, and certainly aren't helping my carpal tunnel."

The tone of her voice changes. Where before she was regal and imposing, now the Queen sounds biting and angry. Obviously this is a sore point for her. Friends. Humans and their words. All that means is that they must pretend, they must act as if they care. I have no such illusions. I care for you, Janice, but only as a master craftsman cares for her tools. Your friends have no vision, they only see the world as it is, not as it could be. I don't seek for peace or for power, only for simplicity. The world condensed down to predator and prey, strong over the weak. Become the strong or become the prey, Janice.

The quickest way to do that would to have Siren drop you in the ocean. Your souls are bound until one of you dies. If that option is still preferable, then I'm sure we can have an agreement. You were chosen, from the millions of humans on this gods-forsaken world. Take it as the honor it is and don't throw it away for human attachment.
