    I really like what Odium's_Shard said back there about the shards' intents.. In keeping with that idea -- that when someone does something in line with the intent of a shard they (at least have a chance to) gain power from it -- Endowment makes people Returned who died sacrificing themselves for others.. (Endowing themselves or their lives before dying and becoming Returned.)
